Der Kampf gegen die Taliban ist längst nicht mehr auf Afghanistan beschränkt. Mit der Ausweitung des Krieges auf Pakistan ist der Konflikt zu einem Regionalereignis geworden. Umso wichtiger ist es zu wissen, wer die in beiden Ländern operierenden Taliban eigentlich sind. International angesehene Experten schildern in diesem Band die Ideologien und Organisationsformen der »Gotteskämpfer« und ihr Verhältnis zur übrigen Bevölkerung. Sie erklären, welche Rolle die Taliban in der Drogenökonomie spielen und wie ihre Stellung innerhalb der Stammesstrukturen ist. Darüber hinaus gehen sie aber auch explizit auf die Rolle der Bundeswehr in Afghanistan ein. Insgesamt wird deutlich, dass der westliche Militäreinsatz nicht mehr Teil eines »war on terrorism« ist, sondern sich zur Bekämpfung eines überregionalen Aufstands entwickelt hat.
