The microelectrode technique is today the most widely used method in electrophy siology. Microelectrodes offer a unique approach to measurements of electrical pa rameters and ion activities of single cells. Several important breakthroughs in trans port physiology have arisen from microelectrode studies. Undoubtedly, there is a progressively wide-spread use of conventional and ion-selective microelectrodes. Due to their particular dimension and properties micro electrodes are exclusive ly applied to measurements on living matter. This must have many consequences to my thoughts on experiments with microelectrodes. In this book, my concern is fo cussing on the description of an intracellular method that should lead to reliable in formation on cellular parameters. The methodical basis for any meaningful applica tion is treated extensively. However, technical perfection and accurate results are not the only concern when working on animals and human beings. Rather, my thoughts are governed by the intellectual and moral mastery of the experimental ap proach on living subjects. A measurement with microelectrodes usually necessitates the sacrifice of an ani mal. This is an immense fact, and means that the knowledge gained by the experi ment must justify the death of a living subject.

The results of the dialect surveys of Great Britain have been published in the form of hundreds of single and collected maps, but so far there has been no actual handbook to the charted material. The Index to Dialect Maps of Great Britain, containing a full introduction, an alphabetical word-list and a comprehensive bibliography, fills this gap. As a compendious directory to mapped words it provides not only a lexical compass in a cartographic jungle, but serves as a guide to the major dialect surveys (Survey of English Dialects, Survey of Anglo-Welsh Dialects, Linguistic Survey of Scotland) and the numerous publications they have spawned. All atlases as well as the maps in the many individual studies and scattered articles are fully documented. Each of the over 2000 lexical entries identifies the original survey by questionnaire number and gives a detailed list of all the references to printed maps in which these words and phrases are contained. The present volume will prove an indispensable guide for all researchers in the field of dialectology and linguistic variation, enabling its users to gain quick access to the various sources of maps. In this way the Index  while still a simple work of reference  may also furnish the materials for more thorough studies of map-making and its implications.

Two distinctive views emerge concerning the presumed battle between Lodge's creative and critical work. One holds that Lodge’s fiction is antimodernist and therefore lags behind his criticism, which displays a theoretical interest in the modernist and – though to a lesser extent – in the postmodernist text. According to the opposite view, time and again there have been strong elements of modernism and postmodernism in Lodge’s novels. In order to bring together the two lines of Lodge’s work, this study shall focus on some aspects in his fiction that are also discussed in his criticism. Given this interdependence, his declared interest in what he calls the ‘art-and-reality novel’ can be regarded as a major starting-point. The emphasis falls on various forms of interplay in the fields of literature, criticism and reality. Accordingly, it should be possible to apply Lodge the theorist to Lodge the novelist and thus bridge or at least explain the alleged division in his work.
