The former director of the Museum of Modern Art in Stockholm makes his literary debut with this dramatic and riveting novel of book publishing, émigrés, spies, and diplomats in World War II Sweden based on his grandfather's life. In 1933, after Hitler and the Nazi Party consolidated power in Germany, Immanuel Birnbaum, a German Jewish journalist based in Warsaw, is forbidden from writing for newspapers in his homeland. Six years later, just months before the German invasion of Poland that ignites World War II, Immanuel escapes to Sweden with his wife and two young sons. Living as a refugee in Stockholm, Immanuel continues to write, contributing articles to a liberal Swiss newspaper in Basel under the name Dr. B. He also begins working as an editor for the legendary German publisher S. Fischer Verlag. Gottfried Bermann Fischer had established an office in Stockholm to evade German censorship, publishing celebrated German writers such as Thomas Mann and Stefan Zweig. Immanuel also becomes entangled with British intelligence agents who produce and distribute anti-Nazi propaganda in Stockholm. On orders from Winston Churchill, the Allied spies plan several acts of sabotage. But when the Swedish postal service picks up a letter written in invisible ink, the plotters are exposed. The letter, long a mystery in military history accounts, was in fact written by Dr. B. But why would a Jew living in exile and targeted for death by the Nazis have wanted to tip them off? Daniel Birnbaum's novel will intrigue readers with its fascinating portrayal of the astonishing connections and often mysterious players illuminated by his grandfather's remarkable wartime life.

CULINARY LESSONS - The Space of Food is based on a series of events, Culinary Lessons, which were hosted by the Städelschule Architecture Class and which engaged with the relation between food, art and architecture. The series addressed the enormous so- cial, economic and cultural spaces that accompany the production and consumption of food, and attempted to unravel some of these spaces' structure and dynamics. The central ambition was to learn from culinary history and, not the least, the recent vanguard of culinary practice. No human activity is so encompassing and engenders such ef- fects on our societies and lives as the culinary. Culinary practices lay out aesthetic as much as ethical trajectories that span from century-old traditions to lifesaving experiments for the present and future. They provide for human sustenance and the highest form of bodily enjoyment while transversing the spaces that they at once produce and profoundly affect. This fourth issue of the SAC JOURNAL presents the central con- versation in Culinary Lessons, which took place in Venice, together with a series of texts and projects that chart and speculate on the relationship between architecture, art and the culinary wor- ld. Contributors to this issue include, amongst others, Charlotte Birnbaum, Daniel Birnbaum, Mike Bouchet, Sanford Kwinter, Fabrice Mazliah, Tobias Rehberger, David Ruy, Kivi Sotamaa, Carolyn Steel, Jan Åman and Johan Bettum. It also features the winning projects of the AIV Master Thesis Prize in 2015 and 2016. SAC JOURNAL is a publication series that addresses topical isues within architecture. The journal documents, critically reviews and presents theoretical discussions concerning contemporary design and research. Culinary Lesson: The Space of Food

Central to this book is the part entitled Selected Source Files that Paul Chan developed together with the graphic designer and Schaulager.These heterogeneous, collage-like sequences of images enable an insight into the visual and intellectual context of the works' evolution.In his essay, Daniel Birnbaum explains the concept of the exhibition, his remarks completed by a photo spread with installation shots of the exhibition at Schaulager, as well as archive material of the artist.The book concludes with a list of works in the exhibition, including detailed information and short comments, as well as reference images of every work.Published on the occasion of the exhibition Paul Chan: Selected Works, at Schaulager, Basel, 22 April - 19 October 2014.English and German text.

Hilma af Klint was an abstract pioneer who eschewed representational painting as early as 1906. Her radical spiritual imagery strives to provide insights into the different dimensions of existence. Besides Hilma af Klint's important and radical abstract paintings, she left behind a plethora of notebooks and drawings. Taking one of these, 'A Work on Flowers, Mosses and Lichen', as a starting point, nine contemporary artists were invited to response to Hilma af Klint and her legacy. Hilma af Klint did not want her works to be seen until several decades after her death.

Over the past few years, abstraction has gained considerable importance in the multifaceted oeuvre of Turner Prize-recipient Wolfgang Tillmans (*1968 in Remscheid). Following Blushes, the monumental Freischwimmer series, and the monochromatic Silver series, his most recent abstract works--of which the creased and folded Lighter series (starting in 2005) is the most significant--treat the photograph no longer as a reproductive medium, but as a material object. Tillmans's paper drop photographs feature the actual prints in almost geometrical compositions that become practically tangible.Constantly oscillating between photograph and object, these most recent works are assembled by Wolfgang Tillmans for the first time in this new book. Det visar sig handla om några av de av de mest spänningsfyllda åren i svensk nittonhundratalshistoria, 1939-1943. Det var då Stockholm blev ett centrum för världspolitiska krafter, hotellreceptionerna fylldes av hemlighetsfulla män och kvinnor med viktiga uppdrag och vardagslivet präglades av osäkerhet och rädsla. Plötsligt kunde vad som helst hända. Hösten 1939, efter att Tyskland invaderat Polen, anländer den tysk-judiska journalisten Immanuel Birnbaum till Stockholm.
