Daniel Coleman is looking to find a home. After a childhood that left him feeling placeless, he ended up in Hamilton, Ontario, one of Canada's most polluted cities at the time. Yardwork is his attempt to put down roots in a place he never expected to be. Coleman decided he wanted to truly know and belong to a small piece of land, his patch of garden on the edge of the Niagara Escarpment, to deeply understand its ecology, landscape and history. Starting with the creation myths and geology, moving through the settler era and up to the present, Coleman pours his considerable talents into learning, and sharing, as much of the story of the land as possible. Most books on ecology focus either on protecting the wilderness or analyzing a toxic dump. Most books on gardens focus on plant health or landscape design. Most books on Indigenous-settler relations focus on politics or social inequities. Yardwork meditates on the sedimentary layers of ecological, cultural and political stories that make up Hamilton, the escarpment city at the Head of the Lake. Along the way Coleman strives to build a new awareness of the place where he lives as sacred land.

This short handbook is a practical and accessible guide to the statistical design and analysis of 2-level, multi-factor experiments of the kind widely used in industry and business. Written for technologists and researchers, it forgoes the usual heavy statistical overlay of typical texts on this subject by focusing on a limited catalog of standard designs that are useful for commonly encountered problems. These design choices are based on relatively recent developments in design projectivity, and their analysis requires nothing more than simple plots of the data: neither special expertise nor complex software is needed. Numerous examples show how to carry out this program in practice. Even though the statistical content of the handbook has been deliberately limited, it nevertheless discusses several practical matters that are rarely included in more comprehensive treatments, but which are vital for experimental success. Among these are the realities of randomization versus split-plotting, the importance of identifying the experimental unit, and a discussion of replication that argues that it is generally not worth the effort. Readers with some prior statistical exposure -- and statisticians -- may also be surprised to find that p-values do not appear anywhere in the book, and that in fact the authors explicitly argue against their use. Those new to the ideas of Statistical Design of Experiments (DOE)-- or even those who have some familiarity but would like greater insight and simplicity -- should find this handbook an effective way to learn about and apply this powerful technology in their own work.

He argues that a specific form of whiteness emerged in Canada that was heavily influenced by Britishness. Examining four allegorical figures that recur in a wide range of Canadian writings between 1820 and 1950 - the Loyalist fratricide, the enterprising Scottish orphan, the muscular Christian, and the maturing colonial son - Coleman outlines a genealogy of Canadian whiteness that remains powerfully influential in Canadian thinking to this day. Blending traditional literary analysis with the approaches of cultural studies and critical race theory, White Civility examines canonical literary texts, popular journalism, and mass market bestsellers to trace widespread ideas about Canadian citizenship during the optimistic nation-building years as well as during the years of disillusionment that followed the First World War and the Great Depression. Tracing the consistent project of white civility in Canadian letters, Coleman calls for resistance to this project by transforming whiteness into wry civility, unearthing rather than disavowing the history of racism in Canadian literary culture.

A pink-skinned, fair-haired child of Canadian missionary parents, Daniel Coleman grew up with an ambivalent relationship to the country of his birth. He was clearly different from his Ethiopian playmates, but because he was born there and knew no other home, he was not completely foreign. Like the eucalyptus, a tree imported to Ethiopia from Australia in the late 19th century to solve a firewood shortage, he and his missionary family were naturalized transplants. As ferenjie, they endlessly negotiated between the culture they brought with them and the culture in which they lived. In The Scent of Eucalyptus, Coleman reflects on his experience of "in-between-ness" amid Ethiopia's violent political upheavals. His intelligent and finely crafted memoir begins in the early 1960s, during the reign of Haile Selassie. It spans the king's dramatic fall from power in 1974, the devastating famines of the mid-1970s and early 1980s, and Mengistu Haile Mariam's brutal 20-year dictatorship. Through memoir and reflection, The Scent of Eucalyptus gives a richly textured view of missionary culture that doesn't yield to black-and-white analysis. Coleman has stepped back from the evangelical Christianity of his parents, although he respects their faith and works. At the same time, with unique double vision, he shows their constant negotiation of in-between-ness. At a simple level, they translated between ferenjie time and Ethiopian time -- Ethiopians follow the Julian calendar, they count thirteen months in a year, and they number the hours of the day beginning at dawn. At a more profound level, the missionaries' religious certitude assumed their superiority over their Ethiopian neighbours. During the Marxist revolution, diplomatic immunity kept them safe when close Ethiopian friends were imprisoned, tortured, and executed because of their missionary connections. Even the famine relief that poured into Ethiopia was two-sided, giving Coleman and his family a taste of luxury in the midst of devastation.

ReCalling Early Canada is the first book-length collection of essays to focus on Canadian literary and cultural production prior to WWI. While Canadian literature is often thought to have emerged in the mid-twentieth-century, the essays in this volume reflect a recent critical interest in earlier generations of cultural production. The authors do not limit their analyses to fiction and poetry_instead they welcome photographs, captivity narratives, family letters, and journalism as part of the repertoire of early Canadian readers. This book fills a significant gap in Canadian criticism, and it appeals both to seasoned scholars and to undergraduate students who may be new to Canadian historical research. Taking seriously the project of "recall," the essays here not only seek to deliver certain historical documents to the light of present-day critique, they also ask important theoretical and political questions about the various methodologies involved in doing so and the assumptions that accompany them. In effect, these essays combine a fresh interest in this burgeoning field of study with new approaches to historical inquiry. The result is a unique and diverse investigation of more than two centuries of a relatively unknown "early Canada."
