En 1953, Nicolas Bouvier quitte l'université pour entreprendre avec un ami, le peintre Thierry Vernet, un long voyage en voiture. Il trace une route vers l'Est qui le mènera de Genève à Ceylan via la Yougoslavie, la Macédoine, l'Iran, l'Afghanistan et l'Inde. Ce périple oriental va constituer la matrice de L'Usage du monde, récit initiatique considéré comme le livre fondateur de la littérature de voyage. Pèlerin d'exception, observateur au regard exercé, Nicolas Bouvier, reconnu comme un écrivain majeur, était aussi un photographe, aujourd'hui encore ignoré. Composé de photographies prises au cours du voyage vers Ceylan, cet album dévoile un pan méconnu de l'œuvre de l'aristocrate vagabond. Scènes de genre, chevaux, artisans, fumeurs d'opium, paysages... les photographies de Nicolas Bouvier sont d'une grande simplicité, elles révèlent beaucoup de leur auteur et de sa manière de flâner avec une sincérité absolue. Tandis que les paysages traduisent l'émotion esthétique au bout d'une route, le portrait représente un dialogue, une confiance établie avec son sujet. Ayant souvent fustigé l'ethnocentrisme occidental, Nicolas Bouvier a tout fait pour y échapper. Sa curiosité, son respect d'autrui et sa volonté de conjurer la " surdité au monde " confèrent à ses images une authenticité essentielle. Ainsi, outre leur aspect autobiographique, ces photographies ont une valeur documentaire exceptionnelle. Elles sont accompagnées de textes se rapportant à ce périple mythique, et d'extraits inédits de carnets de voyage où il avait noté les épisodes les plus cocasses de sa traversée de l'Inde.

At the end of the 1940s Geraldo de Barros sparked controversy in Sao Paulo with his photographic experiments. At the same time it was these works which secured him a scholarship to study at the Ecole Superieure des Beaux Arts in Paris. He developed valuable international contacts to protagonists such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Brassai, Vieira da Silva and Francois Morellet. Returning to Brazil, de Barros became one of the leading artists in the area of concrete art. His photographic oeuvre was brought back into the limelight in the 1980s by his daughter who inspired de Barros to continue his experiments.
