Focus–background structure has taken center stage in much current theorizing about sentence prosody, syntax, and semantics. However, both the inventory of focus expressions found cross-linguistically and the interpretive consequences associated with each of these continue to be insufficiently described. This volume aims at providing new observations on the availability and the use of focus markings in Romance languages. In doing so, it documents the plurality of research on focus in Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, and Romanian. Topics covered include constituent fronting and clefting, the position of subjects and focus particles, clitic doubling of objects, and information packaging in complex sentences. In addition, some contributions explore focus–background structure from acquisitional and diachronic angles, while others adopt a comparative perspective, studying differences between individual Romance and Germanic languages. Therefore, this volume is of interest to a broad audience within linguistics, including syntacticians, semanticists, and historical linguists.

Das Romanistische Jahrbuch (RJb) ist die einzige Fachzeitschrift, die regelmäßig über die Vertretung der romanistischen Sprach-, Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft an den Universitäten Deutschlands und Österreichs informiert und neben den angenommenen Dissertationen und Habilitationen auch die an deutschsprachigen Universitäten in Bearbeitung befindlichen Dissertationsprojekte systematisch erfasst. Im wissenschaftlichen Teil werden im ersten Abschnitt – neben aktuellen Rezensionen – regelmäßig Aufsätze zu zentralen linguistischen und literaturwissenschaftlichen Fragen mit romanisch-vergleichender und/oder einzelsprachlicher Thematik veröffentlicht; die zweite Hälfte des RJb ist aktuellen Problemen der Iberoromanistik (Spanisch/Portugiesisch in und außerhalb Europas, Katalanisch) gewidmet.

Kiran, Maximilian und Sabrina haben schon immer ein ungewöhnliches Leben geführt. Doch als Kiran plötzlich Kräfte in sich entdeckt, die ihre gesamte Welt auf den Kopf stellen, wird ihr Leben auf einmal sehr viel komplizierter. Denn von Eliza, die jahrelang von ihren Angreifern zur Zusammenarbeit gezwungen wurde, erfahren sie von einer Organisation namens Naraka die nur aus derartigen Menschen besteht. Von ihr erfahren sie wie gefährlich diese Menschen und wie groß die Ambitionen der Naraka sind. Doch was genau haben diese Leute eigentlich vor und was hat das alles mit einem zweitausend Jahre alten Schatz zu tun? Und wie sollen sie alle lange genug am Leben bleiben, um Elizas Kinder von der Naraka zu befreien?

Atmospheric chemistry is one of the fastest growing fields in the earth sciences. Until now, however, there has been no book designed to help students capture the essence of the subject in a brief course of study. Daniel Jacob, a leading researcher and teacher in the field, addresses that problem by presenting the first textbook on atmospheric chemistry for a one-semester course. Based on the approach he developed in his class at Harvard, Jacob introduces students in clear and concise chapters to the fundamentals as well as the latest ideas and findings in the field. Jacob's aim is to show students how to use basic principles of physics and chemistry to describe a complex system such as the atmosphere. He also seeks to give students an overview of the current state of research and the work that led to this point. Jacob begins with atmospheric structure, design of simple models, atmospheric transport, and the continuity equation, and continues with geochemical cycles, the greenhouse effect, aerosols, stratospheric ozone, the oxidizing power of the atmosphere, smog, and acid rain. Each chapter concludes with a problem set based on recent scientific literature. This is a novel approach to problem-set writing, and one that successfully introduces students to the prevailing issues. This is a major contribution to a growing area of study and will be welcomed enthusiastically by students and teachers alike.
