I testi selezionati da Luca Baccelli si concentrano sulla teoria della democrazia, dei diritti e della cittadinanza, ma anche sui temi della pace e della guerra, del diritto internazionale e della politica globale. Emerge un realismo politico vivido, capace di mettere in luce le aporie dei sistemi democratici, le patologie della globalizzazione, la sottomissione del diritto internazionale agli interessi delle grandi potenze e alle logiche della guerra, cui l’affermazione del “pensiero unico” e delle politiche neoliberali ha offerto giustificazione etica e giuridica. Questo libro vuole restituire il senso di una ricerca intellettuale radicale, aperta e non conformista, ma sempre ispirata dalla responsabilità verso le sofferenze degli oppressi e le tragedie della contemporaneità. Zolo si dichiara un pessimista radicale, ma rifiuta la rassegnazione, perché un granello di sabbia potrebbe finire nel motore e “arrestare anche la macchina infernale che produce terremoti, uragani, guerre, terrorismo, stragi di innocenti, malattie letali, la morte per fame, la discriminazione spietata fra ricchi e poveri, fra potenti e deboli, fra ‘noi’ e gli ‘altri’”.

C'è una 'giustizia su misura' per le grandi potenze occidentali, che godono di un'assoluta impunità per le guerre di aggressione di questi anni, giustificate come guerre umanitarie o come guerre preventive contro il terrorismo. E c'è una 'giustizia dei vincitori' che si applica agli sconfitti e ai popoli oppressi, con la connivenza delle istituzioni internazionali, l'omertà di larga parte dei giuristi accademici e la complicità dei mass media. In realtà solo la guerra persa è un crimine internazionale.
