This volume brings together eminent scholars from various parts of the world, representing different fields of knowledge in order to explore the social, cultural, political and economic effects of the development of new technologies. On the one hand, the book contextualises the discussion of algorithms and artificial intelligence (AI) within the broader framework of the digital revolution, on the other it also examines individual experiences and practices. Moreover, in light of the speed at which algorithms and AI are being incorporated into various aspects of life, contributors also question the ethical implications of their development. The widespread development of AI and algorithmic solutions is one of the most important contemporary phenomena. It has an overwhelming impact on the social and cultural life of the 21st century. In this context, one can point to both exciting examples of the application of algorithms and AI in business and popular culture, as well as the challenges of widening social inequality or the expanding scope of surveillance. The scope of the impact of algorithms and AI makes the formation of new theoretical frameworks vital. This is the aim of this book, which will be of interest to academics within the humanities and social sciences with an interest in technology and the impact of algorithms and AI on society and culture.

One of the most influential intellectuals of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, sociologist and philosopher Zygmunt Bauman (1925–2017) made reflection on culture a fundamental part of his academic work. He published a substantial number of papers on the topic, and many of his concepts would go on to significantly influence the social sciences and humanities. Bauman began his theoretical studies on culture when working at the University of Warsaw and continued them all his life. Inspired by the many intellectual currents he encountered over his more than six decades of work, Bauman wrote on culture in the contexts of such issues as Marxism and socialism, modernity and the Holocaust, postmodernity and liquid modernity, and contemporary nostalgia. In Zygmunt Bauman and the Theory of Culture Dariusz Brzeziński uses the evolution of Bauman’s theory of culture as a prism through which to offer a comparative analysis, putting Bauman’s work in conversation with the writings of other contemporary intellectuals. In this first comprehensive and critical assessment of Bauman’s lifelong work on culture, Brzeziński includes Bauman’s Polish-language papers and books, as well as his works discovered only posthumously, presenting them to an international audience.

Zebrane w niniejszym wydawnictwie artykuły kontynuują zatem zadanie badania i ukazywania tego, w jak różny, często nieoczywisty sposób, edukacyjne przestrzenie teorii i praktyki są przenikane przez utopię, jej pochodne i składowe. Przy czym należy zaznaczyć, że Autorkom i Autorom patronują zarówno różne pojęcia i teorie utopii, jak i edukacji, co czyni dyskusję i poczynione w jej toku ustalenia bardziej wnikliwymi. Druga część tomu nawiązuje do dorobku pedagogiki w zakresie nowych tendencji w teorii oraz rozwijanych alternatyw edukacyjnych. Autorki i Autorzy widzą w utopii towarzyszący teorii i praktyce edukacji czynnik emancypacji i zmiany. I tutaj obok harmonii koncepcji, ujawniają się dysonanse i kontrasty praktyki. Ostatnia, trzecia część zebranych prac prezentuje udział utopii, jej pochodnych i składowych w edukacji formalnej oraz jej kontekstach. Jednak nie tylko.
