When Turner died in 1851, the general view of an artist's late work was one of decline. Indeed, Turner's own painting from 1845 onwards was described as indulgent, eccentric and 'repulsive', and even his devoted champion John Ruskin commented on its 'wholly inferior value'. However, from the early 1900s there was a major reassessment of Turner's later paintings and sketches. Commentators hailed his study of light as a visionary precursor to the ideas of the Impression­ists. This continued into the twentieth century, with curato­rial choices in some museums presenting Turner's late and unfinished work as distinctly modern. Through a number of key themes and studies into his subject matter, technique and personal activities, this new analysis challenges the historical conceptions of Turner's late style. The idea that as an elderly artist Turner was seen as intro­verted and detached by the Victorian art world is set against the fact that his paintings from 1835 were some of the most popular, accessible and intellectual that he created. Mean­while, questioning the notion that Turner's late work articu­lated a conclusive, radical vision that was heedless of public reaction, the texts explore how Turner had a very firm idea of the workings of the art market at that time. Fully illustrated in colour, and with contributions by some of the foremost Turner scholars, this book breaks new ground in the continuing study of the life and legacy of one of art's greatest masters.

The Tate owns the largest collection of J.M.W. Turner's work, its Clore Gallery houses the Turner Bequest - the paintings, watercolours, drawings, sketchbooks acquired from the artist's estate in 1856. Focusing on 120 works, this volume provides a survey of all the aspects of the Tate Turner collections, introducing not only familiar masterpieces but many other works - such as sheets from sketchbooks or prints. These are included to highlight Turner's achievements and the many themes in his work such as landscape, ideal and naturalistic, British and European, ancient and modern history, marine subjects, literary illustration and images of modern life.

Romanticism was 'a way of feeling' rather than a style in art. In the period c.1775-1830, against the background of the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars, European artists, together with poets and composers, initiated their own rebellion against the dominant political, religious and social ethos of the day. Their quest was for personal expression and individual liberation, and in the process the Romantics transformed the idea of art, seeing it as an instrument of social and psychological change. In this volume, David Blayney Brown takes a thematic approach to Romanticism, relating it to the concurrent, more stylistic movements of Neoclassicism and the Gothic Revival, and discussing its relationship with the political and social developments of the era. He not only looks at how artists as diverse as Goya, Delacroix, Friedrich and Turner responded to landscapes or depicted historical events, but also examines painters such as David and Ingres who are not usually considered Romantics. Brown concludes with an analysis of the continuing relevance of Romantic ideas. As a result, the reader is given a clear understanding of a complex movement that produced some of the greatest European art, literature and music.

Mariele Neudecker is known internationally for her captivating investigations of the natural world. Using film, video, photography and sculpture, including the creation of haunting miniatured landscapes in glass tanks, Neudecker probes the gap between human perception and the reality we all inhabit. Her interest in the social, psychological and historical spaces we live in is central to her work. The works featured in this publication and the accompanying exhibition at Tate St Ives highlight her involvement with the Romantic concept of the sublime in a Cornish context. The works featured are in a range of media including two new tank works and a recent film project, Winterreise The book includes essays by David Blayney Brown, senior curator at Tate and writer and composer Douglas Young bringing new perspectives to the works of this important artist.

Over and Over, Again and Again

A landmark publication positions Turner as a pioneer in depicting contemporary life in the wake of dizzying changes resulting from industrialization and modernization. This monograph is tied to the first exhibition to highlight Turner's contemporary imagery--the most exceptional and distinctive aspect of his work. Rather than making claims for Turner as a proto-modernist, it explores what constituted modernity during his lifetime and what it meant to be a modern artist. Turner's career spanned the Napoleonic Wars, the rise of the British Empire, the birth of finance capitalism and modern industrialization, as well as political, scientific, and cultural advances that transformed society and shaped the modern world. While historians have long recognized that the industrial and political revolutions of the late eighteenth century inaugurated far-reaching change and modernization, these were often ignored by artists as they did not fit into established categories of pictorial representation. This publication shows Turner updating the language of art and transforming his style and practice to produce revelatory, definitive interpretations of modern subjects.
