Si en la primera mitad del siglo XX la ciencia política se mostró indiferente y aun hostil al comercio con otros campos del saber, continuando su marcha en un espléndido aislamiento, con el auge de la teoría empírica comenzó a echar nuevas y más profundas raíces en las demás ciencias sociales. Por otra parte, la creciente gravedad de la crisis política del mundo moderno hizo que los teóricos de otras disciplinas se sintieran tentados a acometer una conceptualización que la nueva ciencia, todavía incipiente, tardaba en abordar por sí misma. Sociólogos, economistas, antropólogos se dedicaron a sistematizar el estudio de fenómenos políticos en un alto nivel de generalidad.
