The county of Worcestershire, finally formed before the Conquest around the burh of Worcester, is exceptionally rich in charter material. The charters contain an unusual amount of valuable topographical detail -in descriptions of location, in comments on the appurtenances of an estate and especially within the boundary clauses which accompany many of the grants or leases. From this very full body of texts, Dr Hooke has been able to identify features which have enabled her to reconstruct the landscape of Anglo-Saxon Worcestershire to a remarkable degree. Della Hooke is widely known for her pioneer work on Anglo-Saxon charters, through which she has been able to reconstruct the Worcestershire landscape as it was almost a thousand years ago. The county -part of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of the Hwicce -responds particularly well to her techniques. It is exceptionally rich in Anglo-Saxon charters and the physical features of the county, which has remained largely agricultural, are relatively easy to identify. Careful study of the charter evidence throws light on the history of settlement and land use, and shows that many features of the medieval county, for instance the rich arable lands of the Vale of Evesham and the wooded landscapes of Malvern and Wyre, were already present in Anglo-Saxon Worcestershire. The book presents all the topographical detail in the charters, together with all the estate boundaries; each charter is individually mapped and the charter's landmarks located. The result is the first such study for any county, providing valuable and readily available data for historians and students of land use. Similar in theme and method to the first and second volumes, Water and the Environment in the Anglo-Saxon World, third volume of the series Daily Living in the Anglo-Saxon World, illuminates how an understanding of the impact of water features on the daily lives of the people and the environment of the Anglo-Saxon world can inform reading and scholarship of the period in significant ways. In discussing fishing, for example, we learn in what ways fish and fishing might have impacted the life of the average person who lived near fishing waters in Anglo-Saxon England: how fishing affected that person's diet, livelihood, and religious obligations, as well as how fish and fishing waters influenced social and cultural structures. Similar lines of enquiry in the volume's chapters shed insight on water imagery in Old English poetry, on place names that delineate types of watery bodies across the Anglo-Saxon landscape, and on human interactions (poetic and otherwise) with fens and other wetlands, sacred wells and springs, landing spaces, bridges, canals, watermills, and river settlements, as well as a variety of other waterscapes. The volume's examination of the impact of water features on the daily lives of the people and the environment of the Anglo-Saxon world fosters an understanding, in the end, not only of the archaeological and material circumstances of water and its uses, but also the imaginative waterscapes found in the textual records of the Anglo-Saxons.

This book concerns the landscape that surrounded early medieval man, often described as he saw and experienced it. The Anglo-Saxon period was one of considerable change in settlement and land use patterns but the landscape regions that emerge, documented for the first time in history, are still familiar to us today. The image conjured up, and for the present it can hardly be any more than an image, is tentative and incomplete, for many more threads have been embroidered upon it in the thousand succeeding years; but the early patterns often guided the latter and occasionally still show through. This book examines the Anglo-Saxon's view of his natural surroundings and how he utilized the resources available -- the cropland, woodland and marginal land of pasture and fen -- and how this is reflected in administrative patterns, how it influenced settlement, communications and trade and, moreover, influenced the landscape patterns of successive ages.
