Dit boek belicht het spanningsveld tussen de rechten van kinderen en de rechten van ouders in de context van armoede. Van kinderen wordt verondersteld dat zij geen aandeel hebben in hun armoede, terwijl ouders vaak wél als verantwoordelijk of zelfs schuldig worden gezien voor de armoedesituatie van hun kinderen. Als gevolg daarvan is er een grotere maatschappelijke bereidheid om hulpbronnen te mobiliseren die kinderen en jongeren ondersteunen, zoals onderwijs, kinderopvang, vrijetijdsbesteding... De bereidheid om ouders te ondersteunen in hun zoektocht naar een geschikte woning, om hen een menswaardig minimuminkomen te garanderen of om hen aan een kwaliteitsvolle baan te helpen, lijkt minder groot.
