Das Verhältnis von natürlicher, gebauter und gestalteter Umwelt ist für die Zukunft unserer Lebensräume von zentraler Bedeutung. Um dieses Verhältnis und seine Veränderung sowie die Folgen für die Entwicklung der Lebensräume beurteilen zu können, sind Kenntnisse der Rahmenbedingungen, Konzepte und Aktivitäten unverzichtbar. Dieser Anspruch gilt insbesondere für alle räumlich planenden und gestaltenden sowie die bauenden Professionen. Um einen qualifizierten Einstieg in das breite Spektrum des Planens, Bauens und der Umwelt zu bieten, werden in diesem Handbuch zentrale Begriffe erläutert. Die Beiträge von über 130 Expertinnen und Experten richten sich sowohl an interessierte Laien als auch an Fachleute aus Wissenschaft und planerischer Praxis. Mit dem Handbuch wird gleichzeitig das Schaffen des langjährigen Dekans der Fakultät Planen, Bauen, Umwelt der TU Berlin, Prof. Dr. Rudolf Schäfer, gewürdigt.

Time has become an increasingly important topic in urban studies and urban planning. The spatial-temporal interplay is not only of relevance for the theory of urban development and urban politics, but also for urban planning and governance. The space-time approach focuses on the human being with its various habits and routines in the city. Understanding and taking those habits into account in urban planning and public policies offers a new way to improve the quality of life in our cities. Adapting the supply and accessibility of public spaces and services to the inhabitants’ space-time needs calls for an integrated approach to the physical design of urban space and to the organization of cities. In the last two decades the body of practical and theoretical work on urban space-time topics has grown substantially. The book offers a state of the art overview of the theoretical reasoning, the development of new analytical tools, and practical experience of the space-time design of public cities in major European countries. The contributions were written by academics and practitioners from various fields exploring space-time research and planning.

Obwohl es ein weitverbreitetes Bewusstsein dafür gibt, dass Zeit(politik) ein expliziter Bestandteil städtischer Politik sein sollte, ist die Implementierung in die Praxis - trotz aller impliziten Bedeutung von zeitrelevanten Politiken - noch nicht sehr weit entwickelt. Das Thema Raumzeitpolitik wurde bereits vor einigen Jahren in seinen vielfältigen Dimensionen beleuchtet. Dennoch erwies es sich aktuell erneut als sinnvoll und notwendig, vor allem vor dem Hintergrund der zunehmenden Debatten um Gerechtigkeit in der Stadt (soziale Gerechtigkeit, Raumgerechtigkeit, Umweltgerechtigkeit, Recht auf Stadt), auch die Zeitgerechtigkeit in den Fokus eines Arbeitskreises zu stellen. Der vorliegende Sammelband behandelt dieses wichtige Thema in jeweils mehreren spezifischen Beiträgen aus vier zentralen Perspektiven: -Normative Überlegungen zu Zeit, Raum und Planung -Rhythmus und Takt als Strukturmuster urbanen Lebens -Zeit-Räume in der Stadt -Lebenszeit und Zeiterleben in der Stadt Der Schlussbeitrag stellt die Verbindung zwischen den verschiedenen Perspektiven her, arbeitet die Komplementaritäten und Widersprüche heraus und entwickelt eine Forschungs- und Handlungsagenda. Diese beansprucht nicht, die Probleme vollständig zu lösen, leistet aber doch einen Beitrag zur bewussteren Planung in Bezug auf Zeit und damit zur Verbesserung der Lebensqualität in den Städten.

The fate of the city as a way of organising human social life has frequently been declared as sealed. After decades of urban sprawl, technological revolutions towards the end of the 20th century sparked speculation about the virtualisation of urban functions: cyberspace instead of city. Moreover, the flexibilisation of time structures began to add a temporal dimension to the fragmentation of urban regions. Looking back on the apocalyptic prophecies of the 1990s, it is encouraging to discover that the city is still among the living. There is indeed a simultaneity of dispersion and concentration. Spatial and temporal density are not in the process of dissolving: they are being redefined. The international conference Time Space Places undertook to trace the course of this redefinition and the new constellations of our urban system.
