Dominic Bliss

Erno Egri Erbstein è stato un rivoluzionario del calcio. Nato a Nagyvárad il 13 maggio 1898 da un’agiata famiglia israelita e cresciuto a Budapest, dove si laurea in Educazione Fisica, inizia presto la carriera di calciatore, tra Ungheria, Italia e Stati Uniti. Nel 1928 torna in Italia come allenatore: dopo le stagioni al Bari e alla Nocerina, allena il Cagliari, con cui sfiora la promozione in A, e la Lucchese. Nel 1938 passa al Torino, ma solo per pochi mesi perché, dopo la proclamazione delle leggi razziali, viene mandato in Olanda ad allenare lo Xerxes. Dove però non arriva mai: gli viene inspiegabilmente annullato il visto, rientra in patria e diventa rappresentante di tessuti italiani. Ma il nazismo lo raggiunge: quando nel 1944, le truppe tedesche invadono l’Ungheria, la moglie e le sue due figlie si rifugiano in una fabbrica di uniformi militari all’interno di un convento cattolico ed Erbstein finisce internato in un campo di lavoro. Mentre un treno lo sta per portare verso i campi di sterminio, riesce a fuggire di nuovo. Tornato in Italia dopo la guerra, è ricontattato da Novo che gli offre la direzione tecnica del Torino. E qui il magiaro realizza il suo capolavoro: crea una squadra irresistibile che pratica un calcio avveniristico. Erbstein cura maniacalmente ogni minimo dettaglio: dalla preparazione atletica (fu lui a introdurre il riscaldamento) all’alimentazione, fino alla psicologia dei giocatori. Diventa il tecnico di calcio più innovativo del suo tempo. Tutto finisce a Superga, il 4 maggio 1949, quando il Grande Torino è consegnato definitivamente al mito. Il suo indiscusso artefice muore insieme ai suoi ragazzi. La sua storia viene dimenticata, finché tanti anni dopo si torna a parlare di lui riconoscendo il suo valore umano e sportivo.

Ernő Egri Erbstein was one of the greatest coaches there has ever been, a pioneering tactician and supreme man-manager who created Il Grande Torino, the team that dominated Italian football in the years immediately after the Second World War. His was an extraordinary life that was characterised by courage and resourcefulness in the face of adversity. Erbstein was part of the great Jewish coaching tradition developed in the coffee houses of Budapest and, playing in Hungary, Italy and the USA, he moved to Bari to embark on a coaching career that soon became noted for its innovativeness. That he and his family survived the Holocaust was a matter of astonishing good fortune, but just four years after the end of the war, Erbstein was killed with his team in the Superga air crash. Dominic Bliss, through a combination of interviews, painstaking archival research and careful detective work, pieces together the lost history of one of football's most influential early heroes.
