En 2004, la communauté scientifique et artistique célébrait le centenaire de la disparition du grand médecin physiologiste Etienne-Jules Marey (1830-1904), propagateur en France de la méthode graphique, inventeur de la chronophotographie et pionnier du cinéma. A l'occasion de cet événement se tinrent au musée d'Orsay une exposition sur les expériences aérodynamiques du physiologiste et, les 19 et 20 octobre 2004, un important colloque intitulé " Etienne-Jules Marey et le film scientifique ", auquel participèrent de nombreux spécialistes venus d'horizons disciplinaires variés. Cet ouvrage regroupe les textes des principales communications du colloque ; quelques autres contributions éclairées ont été adjointes. L'œuvre de Marey, la méthode graphique, les débuts du cinéma et l'image scientifique y sont explorés sous différents aspects. Richement illustré, le livre est accompagné d'un DVD exceptionnel réunissant quelque quatre cents films chronophotographiques de la période 1890-1904, incunables issus des riches collections de la Cinémathèque française. Né à l'initiative de la Société d'études sur Marey et l'image animée (Sémia), cet ensemble exceptionnel est le fruit d'une collaboration étroite avec la Cinémathèque française et le musée d'Orsay. Il a bénéficié du soutien de l'Université Paris 7-Denis Diderot et de LVMH R&D Parfums et Cosmétiques.

No other artist of the nineteenth century balanced a reverence for the past with such a strong ambition and spirit of innovation. It brings to life his relationships with his contemporaries, ranging from the painters Pierre Narcisse Guèrin and Antoine Jean Gros to Gustave Courbet, as well as his exploration of literary, historical, and biblical themes, his writing in personal journals, and his triumphant exhibition at the Exposition Universelle of 1855. Richly illustrated and encompassing the entire range and diversity of his art, from grand paintings to intimate drawings, Delacroix illuminates how this intrepid figure changed the course of European painting by heeding “a call for the liberty of art.”
