French eighteenth-century painting is characterized by its immense variety, ranging from the "grand manner" -- history painting -- to so-called minor genres such as still-life and portraiture. Artists such as Boucher and Fragonard drew inspiration from many different sources: famous biblical or mythological episodes, to flutes galantes, and bourgeois domestic scenes. Jarasse explains the key artists and movements within this turbulent century and charts with high-quality, full-color illustrations the progressive emancipation of painters that paralleled the spread of Enlightened thinking. Artists surveyed include Watteau, Fragonard, Boucher, Greuze, Chardin and David as well as lesser-known but equally notable painters including Coypel, Le Moyne, Vernet, Oudry, Nattier and others.

Débattue depuis des siècles, dans la France du Second Empire, en 1900 à Londres, dans la Russie révolutionnaire, à Berlin et à Vienne autour de Martin Buber et du mouvement sioniste, à Jérusalem avec les pionniers, dans le Montparnasse des années 20, à New York durant les sixties, la question " existe-t-il un art juif ? " semblerait insoluble. Régulièrement, les philosophes ou les théologiens s'enlisent dans l'analyse de l'interdit de l'image et les historiens de l'art ressassent, face au déni antisémite, les allusions archéologiques, exposent des judaïca et convoquent Modigliani, Chagall ou Barnett Newman... Quelle catégorie, en effet, pourrait recouvrir légitimement les antiquités bibliques, les objets de culte, des scènes de la vie du schtetl, un paysage de Pissarro et des toiles abstraites de Rothko ? Dominique Jarrassé réfléchit à la question elle-même et examine pourquoi la notion d'art juif a été si souvent manipulée, pourquoi tant d'avis divergents ont été émis. En montrant comment on a écrit l'histoire de l'art juif, il tord le cou à des appellations comme " école juive de Paris ", il dénonce l'usage fallacieux de concepts nationalistes ou biologiques comme " artistes juifs ", ainsi que les dérives d'un marché florissant... A la lecture de cet essai, il apparaît clairement que routes ces variations sur l'art juif ou les arts juifs sont d'abord des variations sur l'" être juif ".
