Simians, Cyborgs and Women is a powerful collection of ten essays written between 1978 and 1989. Although on the surface, simians, cyborgs and women may seem an odd threesome, Haraway describes their profound link as "creatures" which have had a great destabilizing place in Western evolutionary technology and biology. Throughout this book, Haraway analyzes accounts, narratives, and stories of the creation of nature, living organisms, and cyborgs. At once a social reality and a science fiction, the cyborg--a hybrid of organism and machine--represents transgressed boundaries and intense fusions of the nature/culture split. By providing an escape from rigid dualisms, the cyborg exists in a post-gender world, and as such holds immense possibilities for modern feminists. Haraway's recent book, Primate Visions, has been called "outstanding," "original," and "brilliant," by leading scholars in the field. (First published in 1991.)

In the midst of spiraling ecological devastation, multispecies feminist theorist Donna J. Haraway offers provocative new ways to reconfigure our relations to the earth and all its inhabitants. Ce renouveau semble indissociable de la mise en crise généralisée des modes de pensée qui, d'une manière ou d'une autre, devaient leur autorité à une référence au progrès, à la rationalité, à l'universalité. Mise en crise redoutable car on ne se défait pas sans danger de ce qui a servi de boussole à la pensée euro-américaine depuis qu'il est question de modernité. Mise en crise nécessaire car ces modes de pensée sont sourds à la nouveauté effective de cette époque marquée par la menace du désordre climatique, le saccage systématique de la terre, la difficulté d'entendre les voix qui nous engagent à penser devant le lien fort entre la modernité et les ravages de la colonisation. S'il faut parler de « gestes spéculatifs », c'est que la pensée spéculative est trop souvent définie comme purement théorique, abusivement abstraite, ou relevant tout simplement d'un imaginaire déconnecté de toute prise sur le réel. Elle est, telle que nous voudrions en hériter, affaire de gestes, d'engagements par et pour un possible, de virtualités situées. Le sens de tels engagements tient à leurs conséquences, à la modification de l'appréhension du présent qu'ils entraînent. Following the spectacular exhibition of his work in London, Olafur Eliasson (*1967) will be presenting at the beginning of 2020 an entirely new installation specifically developed for Kunsthaus Zürich. It is precisely these works by the Danish-Icelandic artist that attract viewers as if by magic. Olafur Eliasson points out that his core interest is the experience of the physical encounter with the work itself. For years, he has been one of the most important contemporary artists addressing early on the theme of sustainability and now appeals to a large number of viewers with his themes on ecological issues. The book and exhibition therefore revolve around our relationship with other species and life forms on Earth. Olafur Eliasson's advocacy of a worldview of coexistence and collaboration becomes ever more apparent when he transforms the museum space into an immersive installation engaging our senses. We are reminded of scientific arrangements that explore physical natural phenomena such as light, water, movement and reflection, without remaining in the abstract or formal framework of purely scientific experiments. The immediate experiential space that the artist creates prevents this, while generating an enduring resonating space on themes such as climate change, migration and the exploitation of our planet's resources. Olafur Eliasson succeeds in translating these essential questions and social concerns into a formal language that not only appeals to the viewers' intellect, but also touches and moves them emotionally. In 2006, about 69 million U.S. households had pets, giving homes to around 73.9 million dogs, 90.5 million cats, and 16.6 million birds, and spending more than 38 billion dollars on companion animals. As never before in history, our pets are truly members of the family. But the notion of “companion species”—knotted from human beings, animals and other organisms, landscapes, and technologies—includes much more than “companion animals.” In When Species Meet, Donna J. Haraway digs into this larger phenomenon to contemplate the interactions of humans with many kinds of critters, especially with those called domestic. At the heart of the book are her experiences in agility training with her dogs Cayenne and Roland, but Haraway’s vision here also encompasses wolves, chickens, cats, baboons, sheep, microorganisms, and whales wearing video cameras. From designer pets to lab animals to trained therapy dogs, she deftly explores philosophical, cultural, and biological aspects of animal–human encounters. In this deeply personal yet intellectually groundbreaking work, Haraway develops the idea of companion species, those who meet and break bread together but not without some indigestion. “A great deal is at stake in such meetings,” she writes, “and outcomes are not guaranteed. There is no assured happy or unhappy ending-socially, ecologically, or scientifically. There is only the chance for getting on together with some grace.” Ultimately, she finds that respect, curiosity, and knowledge spring from animal–human associations and work powerfully against ideas about human exceptionalism.
