From 1955 onwards, the makers of each documenta sought to offer insights into current trends in art and to document the spirit of their particular time. This publication sets the history of documenta in the context of the political, cultural and socio-historical development of the Federal Republic of Germany in the second half of the twentieth century. It thereby illuminates a relationship of mutual dependence between art and history. Time and time again, this major international exhibition was a place where West Germany's perception of itself was negotiated. Every few years since 1955, the creators of documenta set themselves the task of providing an insight into current trends in art and of capturing the zeitgeist of recent art production. Despite its name, documenta's primary concerns are neither with the simple documentation of individual artists and their work nor with developments in art history, but instead with providing a historical space where art reflects and comments on social constellations and political or social change, or demands it through art interventions. documenta is not only a historical testimony and event, but also a show at which - through the medium of art-- self-interpretation becomes the catalyst for debate and historical change. For the first time, this book places the history of documenta in the context of the political, cultural and societal development of Germany during the second half of the twentieth century, illustrating how art and history can be explored in terms of a mutually dependent relationship.

The anthology examines connections and contradictions along the global commodity chain from production to trade and consumption, focusing on indigenous harvest workers in Mexico, Costa Rican smallholders, importers in Hamburg, roasters, consumers and Fair Trade activists as historical actors. The countries dealt with in the contributions range from Central America through Hamburg and both German states to India, Ethiopia and Brazil. The international team of authors presents new research results on the economic, social and cultural history of coffee. German description: Kaffee war im 20. Dorothee Wierling erzählt eine bewegende Geschichte, die das Kriegserlebnis auf neue Weise verständlich machen kann. In den Jahren des Ersten Weltkriegs schrieben sich die sozialdemokratische Feministin Lily Braun, ihr Ehemann Heinrich, der gemeinsame Sohn Otto sowie eine enge Freundin der Familie, Julie Vogelstein, etwa 2000 Briefe. Basierend auf dieser fast vollständig erhaltenen Korrespondenz gibt Dorothee Wierling einen einzigartig dichten Einblick in die Alltags- und Gedankenwelt der Briefschreiber/innen während dieser Jahre. Angesiedelt in einem Milieu, in dem sich adlige, bildungsbürgerliche, sozialdemokratische, feministische und lebensreformerische Werthorizonte mit nationalistischer Kriegseuphorie vermischen, wird der Krieg als ein Ereignis erfahren, das zuvor rein Privates und Alltägliches in eine Sphäre von weltgeschichtlicher Bedeutung überführt. Eindrucksvoll lässt uns die Autorin am Kriegsalltag und der Reaktion auf die Ereignisse in der Heimat (vor allem in Berlin) und an der Front teilhaben. Zugleich zeigt sie, wie sich in den Briefen die Gefühle, Beziehungen, Ich-Ideale und die Sinnsuche in einer militarisierten Gesellschaft ausdrücken.
