Cei trei muschetari (Les Trois Mousquetaires) este un roman de Alexandre Dumas tatăl, care relatează aventurile tânărului d'Artagnan după ce sosește la Paris în urmărirea visului său de a deveni un muschetar al regelui. D'Artagnan nu este însă unul din muschetarii din titlu; acesta se referă la prietenii săi Athos, Porthos și Aramis. Povestea lui d'Artagnan se continuă în alte două romane ale lui Dumas, După douăzeci de ani și Vicontele de Bragelonne. Romanul lui Dumas descrie aventurile lui d'Artagnan și ale camarazilor săi între anii 1626 și 1628, și implicarea lor în intrigile din jurul regelui Ludovic al XIII-lea, al puternicului Cardinal Richelieu, al frumoasei regine Ana de Austria, al iubitului englez al acesteia, George Villiers, Duce de Buckingham, precum și în asediul orașului La Rochelle. Acțiunile celor patru prieteni se vor intersecta și cu planurile misterioaseiMilady de Winter, și ale secretarului lui Richelieu, Contele de Rochefort. Cei trei muschetari a fost publicat în revista Le Siècle între martie și iulie 1844. Dumas pretindea că se baza pe manuscrise descoperite în Biblioteca națională. The Three Musketeers (Les Trois Mousquetaires) is a novel by Alexandre Dumas, pere. It recounts the adventures of a young man named d'Artagnan after he leaves home to become a musketeer. D'Artagnan is not one of the musketeers of the title; those are his friends Athos, Porthos, and Aramis-inseparable friends who live by the motto, "One for all, and all for one." The story of d'Artagnan is continued in Twenty Years After and The Vicomte de Bragelonne. Those three novels by Dumas are together known as the D'Artagnan Romances. The Three Musketeers was first published in serial form in the magazine Le Siecle between March and July 1844."

Publicul aștepta cu viu interes apariția următoarelor aventuri ale lui Monte-Cristo acest supraom înzestrat cu atâtea calități excepționale posesor al unei averi fabuloase și al unei distincții aristocratice care îndeplinește în mod deliberat rolul de unealtă a sorții distrugându-i pe cei corupți și josnici izbavindu-i de suferințe pe cei năpăstuiți. Dar succesul romanului nu se datora numai acestui personaj misterios și atotputernic ci și dramatismului situațiilor și patetismului cu care Dumas crease această lume atât de asemănătoare cu lumea reală. Căci mai mult decât o profesie Dumas și-a făcut din scris o rațiune de a fi o trăire profundă o împlinire (chiar dacă efemeră) a dorinței de a schimba lumea de a înlătura răul. In genre, The Three Musketeers is primarily a historical and adventure novel. However, Dumas also frequently works into the plot various injustices, abuses, and absurdities of the old regime, giving the novel an additional political aspect at a time when the debate in France between republicans and monarchists was still fierce. The story was first serialised from March to July 1844, during the July Monarchy, four years before the French Revolution of 1848 violently established the Second Republic.
