Fue fundada en 1118 o 1119 por nueve caballeros franceses liderados por Hugo de Payns tras la Primera Cruzada. Su proposito original era proteger las vidas de los cristianos que peregrinaban a Jerusalen tras su conquista. Martin no era exactamente el caballero mas firme o piadoso de la historia, pero el se las ingeniaba para escapar del Rey cuando ordeno la masacre de los caballeros templarios y asi poder robar su legendario tesoro que era el mas grande del mundo con el apoyo de la banda eclosiana, mediante un plan audaz que seria capaz de realizarlo por debajo de las narices del Rey. Es impresionante y sorprendente la inclinacion que tiene Alejandro Dumas por las narraciones historicas y por la trama que encierra determinada crueldad, que sin lugar a dudas al mezclar estos dos aspectos, la historia del libro se convierte en algo extraordinario."
