Lexicography, together with grammatical studies and textual criticism, forms the basis of biblical exegesis. Recent decades have seen much progress in this field, yet increasing specialization also tends to have the paradoxical effect of turning exegesis into an independent discipline, while leaving lexicography to the experts. The present volume seeks to renew and intensify the exchange between the study of words and the study of texts. This is done in reference to both the Hebrew source text and the earliest Greek translation, the Septuagint. Questions addressed in the contributions to this volume are how linguistic meaning is effected, how it relates to words, and how words may be translated into another language, in Antiquity and today. Etymology, semantic fields, syntagmatic relations, word history, neologisms and other subthemes are discussed. The main current and prospective projects of biblical lexicology or lexicography are presented, thus giving an idea of the state of the art. Some of the papers also open up wider perspectives of interpretation.

The Psalms of Solomon

Die Septuaginta, die antike griechische Übersetzung des Alten Testaments, ist wahrscheinlich das erste große Übersetzungsprojekt der griechisch-römischen Antike. Mit ihr tritt die Religion und Kultur des antiken Judentums erstmals in das Blickfeld eines griechischsprachigen Publikums, dem die in hebräischer Sprache verfassten heiligen Schriften der Juden nicht zugänglich waren. Das Projekt der Übersetzung bedeutete zugleich eine Übertragung von religiösen, sozialen und anthropologischen Kategorien und Konzepten semitischen Ursprungs in eine andere, vom Hellenismus geprägte Sprach- und Wissenschaftskultur. In den letzten Jahren ist die Septuaginta immer mehr ins Zentrum bibelwissenschaftlicher, historischer und philologischer Forschung gerückt. Dabei richtet sich die Aufmerksamkeit nicht nur auf die näheren Umstände, die zu ihrer Entstehung in Alexandrien führten, sondern auch auf die zahlreichen sprachlichen und inhaltlichen Spezifika des griechischen Bibeltextes. Kaum erforscht ist dabei die Frage, in welchem Maße die griechische Bibelübersetzung stilistische und rhetorische Elemente aufweist, die dem hebräischen Ausgangstext fremd sind. Haben die Übersetzer ihre rhetorischen und stilistischen Kompetenzen genutzt, um ihrem Werk einen bestimmten ornatus zu verleihen? Kann man mit Recht wie Augustin behaupten, dass nicht nur die Verfasser der biblischen Schriften, sondern auch die Übersetzer et eloquenter et sapienter, d.h. beredsam und weise zu formulieren verstanden? Der Sammelband greift dieses in der gegenwärtigen Forschung vernachlässigte Thema auf. Sieben Autorinnen und Autoren untersuchen stilistische und rhetorische Elemente in verschiedenen biblischen Büchern (u.a. Psalmen, Amos, Weisheit Salomos) und eröffnen damit ein Arbeitsfeld, das in Zukunft mehr Beachtung verdient.

Over the last years, the Septuagint has gradually edged closer into the interest of biblical scholars and into the centre of historical and philological research. The question which has hardly been studied so far is to what extent the Greek translation of the Bible consists of stylistic and rhetorical elements that are present in the Hebrew source text. This issue is taken up in this collected volume.
