No evocation of Parisian life in the second half of the nineteenth century can match that found in the journals of the brothers Goncourt The journal of the brothers Edmond and Jules de Goncourt is one of the masterpieces of nineteenth-century French literature, a work that in its richness of color, variety, and seemingly casual perfection bears comparison with the great paintings of their friends and contemporaries the Impressionists. Born nearly ten years apart into a French aristocratic family, the two brothers formed an extraordinarily productive and enduring literary partnership, collaborating on novels, criticism, and plays that pioneered the new aesthetic of naturalism. But the brothers’ talents found their most memorable outlet in their journal, which is at once a chronicle of an era, an intimate glimpse into their lives, and the purest expression of a nascent modern sensibility preoccupied with sex and art, celebrity and self-exposure. The Goncourts visit slums, brothels, balls, department stores, and imperial receptions; they argue over art and politics and trade merciless gossip with and about Hugo, Baudelaire, Degas, Flaubert, Zola, Rodin, and many others. And in 1871, Edmond maintains a vigil as his brother dies a slow and agonizing death from syphilis, recording every detail in the journal that he would continue to maintain alone for another two decades.

Voici l'histoire de la splendeur et de la décadence d'un homme de lettres et d'un homme du siècle, Charles Demailly, triste héros qui, après avoir tenté trois fois sa chance, dans le journalisme, la littérature et le mariage, finit son existence dans un asile de fous. Dans ce roman à clés paru en 1860, les frères Goncourt s'attaquent à la bohème littéraire, incarnée par la presse à scandale - ce " monde carotteur de la pièce de cinq francs ", affairiste et malhonnête, qu'ils dénoncent dans leur journal. En mettant en scène, sous des noms d'emprunt, leurs contemporains - Théodore de Banville, Théophile Gautier, Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly ou encore Gustave Flaubert -, ils nous plongent dans l'intimité d'un cercle de lettrés. Ils dressent, enfin, une véritable cartographie du plaisir parisien, et nous promènent dans les théâtres, les bals et les cafés, partout où règne la " blague ", parole vide et gonflée d'air comme la blague à tabac qui lui a donné son nom. Si Charles Demailly déchaîna les foudres des critiques - Adolphe Gaïffe s'opposa à sa parution, " au nom de l'honneur des lettres et de la considération du journalisme " -, il n'en demeure pas moins une pièce fondatrice de l'œuvre des Goncourt. Ainsi que l'écrivait George Sand aux deux frères : " Votre livre est très beau, et vous avez un grand, un énorme talent. "

L’Ukiyo-e (« images du monde flottant ») est un courant artistique japonais qui naquit pendant la période prospère de l’Edo (1615-1868). Caractéristiques de cette période, les estampes sont l’œuvre collective d’un artiste, d’un graveur et d’un imprimeur. Développées en raison de leur faible coût grâce à l’évolution de la technique, elles représentent la vie quotidienne, les femmes, les acteurs du théâtre kabuki ou encore les lutteurs de sumo. Le paysage s’imposera ensuite comme l’un des sujets favoris. Moronobu, le fondateur, Shunsho, Utamaro, Hokusai ou encore Hiroshige sont les artistes les plus réputés de ce mouvement. En 1868, le Japon s’ouvre à l’Occident. La maîtrise de la technique, la finesse des œuvres et la précision graphique séduisent immédiatement l’Occident et influencent les plus grands tels les impressionnistes, Van Gogh ou Klimt. C’est la période dite du « Japonisme ». A travers une analyse thématique, Woldemar von Seidlitz et Dora Amsden soulignent en filigrane l’influence immense qu’eut ce mouvement sur toute la scène artistique occidentale. Ces magnifiques estampes représentant l’évolution de l’idéal féminin, la place des dieux, ou l’importance accordée au paysage, sont aussi le précieux témoignage d’une société aujourd’hui révolue.

This translation of the French Femme au dix-huitiéme siécle from 1862, first published in English in 1928, traces the life of the Eighteenth Century woman in an historical account. Through discussion of evidence from paintings and memoirs, the book draws an intimate lifelike account of what lay behind these images for women in France of this time. The Goncourt brothers wrote several social histories but were also art critics and novelists. Here they offer portraits of upper, middle and working class women in France. This is one of the earliest accounts of life for women in this period.
