Dieser Roman, 1935 in Wien zum erstenmal veröffentlicht, aber von ungünstigen Zeitumständen in seiner Wirkung behindert, ist auf Umwegen über England, Amerika und Frankreich, in die deutsche Literatur zurückgekehrt, in der er heute einen wichtigen Platz einnimmt. Wie Joyces "Ulysses", mit dem die Kritik Canettis Buch immer wieder verglichen hat, ist "Die Blendung" im Grunde eine mächtige Metapher für die Auseinandersetzung des Geistes mit der Wirklichkeit, für Glanz und Elend des einsam reflektierenden Menschen in der Welt. Protagonist der Handlung ist Kien, ein berühmter Sinologe, der in seiner 25 000 Bände umfassenden Bibliothek ein grotesk eigensinniges Höhlenleben führt. Seine Welt ist im Kopf, aber sein Kopf ist ohne Sinn für die Welt. Als Kien, von seiner Haushälterin zur Ehe verführt, mit den Konventionen und Tatsachen des alltäglichen Lebens konfrontiert wird, "rettet" er sich gewissermaßen in den Irrsinn.

It is also a portrait of Canetti's first wife, Veza. Within the framework of these great passions, Canetti provides an account of the Vienna and Berlin of the 1920s.
