One of Chicago's great cultural achievements, the Institute of Design was among the most important schools of photography in twentieth-century America. It began as an outpost of experimental Bauhaus education and was home to an astonishing group of influential teachers and students, including Lázló Moholy-Nagy, Harry Callahan, and Aaron Siskind. To date, however, the ID's enormous contributions to the art and practice of photography have gone largely unexplored. Taken by Design is the first publication to examine thoroughly this remarkable institution and its lasting impact. With nearly 300 illustrations, including many never-before published photographs, Taken by Design examines the changing nature of photography over this critical period in America's midcentury. It starts by documenting the experimental nature of Moholy's Bauhaus approach and photography's new and enhanced role in training the "complete designer." "Trained as a sculptor, Japanese artist Tokihiro Sato first turned to photography as a means of documenting his work. It is through his photographs, however, that the artist has found a way to successfully blend process and product. Sato creates long-exposure photographs in which he travels through the frame of the landscape, drawing with a flashlight (by night) or reflecting sunlight back at the camera with a mirror (by day). These lights are recorded as traces of the artist's presence, while he himself is rendered invisible by his motion during the course of the exposure. Installed as large-scale transparencies that are lit from behind, these glowing images embody presence and absence, and materiality and spirituality." In 1950s America there were neither likely nor logical paths for a photographer. Family man, optician, photographer and avid reader, Ralph Eugene Meatyard found himself in the midst of a cultural and philosophical movement in Lexington, Kentucky, which at that time included such figures as Thomas Merton, Wendell Berry and Guy Davenport. Through the camera, Meatyard explored and created a fantasy world of dolls and masks, where his family members played the central roles on an ever-changing stage.
