The Jablonka Collection is one of the highest-profile repositories of American and German art of the 1980s. In this catalog, the art dealer, gallerist, and curator Rafael Jablonka provides for the first time an insight into his wide-ranging collection, which is dedicated primarily to artists of his own generation--featuring artists like Eric Fischl, Damien Hirst, Roni Horn, Mike Kelly, Sherrie Levine, Thomas Schütte, Terry Winters, and many more. Jablonka has collected art for decades according to the basic principle of assembling multiple works from the different creative phases of artists. Featuring reproductions of some 120 works--paintings, works on paper, sculpture, and installations--the book introduces the oeuvres of the artists in question and presents a representative cross-section of the extensive Jablonka Collection, which was presented to the Albertina in Vienna on permanent loan in 2019.

Eric Fischl

American painter, sculptor and printmaker Eric Fischl (born 1948) is internationally known for his unusual nude paintings, featuring couples and families, which explore tensions between sexuality and power. Many of his works specifically address coming-of-age moments, blossoming sexual awareness and voyeurism--the paintings "Bad Boy" (1981) and "Birthday Boy" (1983) both depict young boys looking at older women in provocative poses on a bed. A charged, oppressive sexual atmosphere often permeates his scenes and overshadows the relationships depicted. In contrast to the bizarre and often unsettling content of his work is Fischl's bright color palette, with its lurid deep yellow and red tones. This catalogue focuses on Fischl's graphic work, showing a cross-section of his substantial printoeuvre. Also included is an interview by Lawrence Weschler.

Der inhaltliche Schwerpunkt liegt auf der Charakteristik der einzelnen Werkzyklen. Gezeigt werden neben den ersten Schüttbildern Bodenschüttbilder aus dem Roten Zyklus (1995), Werke aus dem 6-Tage-Spiel (1989) oder dem gelben Auferstehungszyklus (2002). Dominiert in den monochromen Arbeiten eine Farbe, so kommt es in anderen zu regelrechten Farbexplosionen. Die Farbe wird mal geschüttet, mal gespritzt, mal flüssig, mal pastos aufgetragen, mal mit dem Pinsel oder mit der bloßen Hand verschmiert. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Zustand der Farbe, der zwischen flüssig und fest variiert.00Exhibition: Albertina, Wien, Austria (17.05. - 11.08.2019).
