1936 : deux années après son premier texte, Sur les cimes du désespoir, Cioran écrit Le livre des leurres. L'ouvrage est publié aux éditions Cugetarea de Bucarest. À cette époque, l'auteur, après une bourse d'études en Allemagne, devient professeur de philosophie dans un lycée de Brasov. Un an plus tard, il s'installe en France. En 1947, il écrit en français. Difficile pourtant d'invoquer la biographie pour rendre compte d'un texte d'une grande originalité et d'une extrême densité spirituelle. On y trouve déjà ce qui caractérise le style de Cioran : l'aphorisme considéré comme le moyen d'expression privilégié d'une vérité paradoxale et fugitive. Mais on découvre surtout une palette stupéfiante de figures, essai, prose poétique, prosopopée, prière, etc. - successivement convoquées pour traduire une expérience intérieure bouleversante, une nuit de l'esprit, qui s'ouvre sur la révolte et s'achève dans le silence.
