This book features a selection of articles based on the XXXV Białowieża Workshop on Geometric Methods in Physics, 2016. The series of Białowieża workshops, attended by a community of experts at the crossroads of mathematics and physics, is a major annual event in the field. The works in this book, based on presentations given at the workshop, are previously unpublished, at the cutting edge of current research, typically grounded in geometry and analysis, and with applications to classical and quantum physics. In 2016 the special session "Integrability and Geometry" in particular attracted pioneers and leading specialists in the field. Traditionally, the Białowieża Workshop is followed by a School on Geometry and Physics, for advanced graduate students and early-career researchers, and the book also includes extended abstracts of the lecture series.

Geometric Methods in Physics XXXV

This book collects papers based on the XXXVI Białowieża Workshop on Geometric Methods in Physics, 2017. The Workshop, which attracts a community of experts active at the crossroads of mathematics and physics, represents a major annual event in the field. Based on presentations given at the Workshop, the papers gathered here are previously unpublished, at the cutting edge of current research, and primarily grounded in geometry and analysis, with applications to classical and quantum physics. In addition, a Special Session was dedicated to S. Twareque Ali, a distinguished mathematical physicist at Concordia University, Montreal, who passed away in January 2016. For the past six years, the Białowieża Workshops have been complemented by a School on Geometry and Physics, comprising a series of advanced lectures for graduate students and early-career researchers. The extended abstracts of this year’s lecture series are also included here. The unique character of the Workshop-and-School series is due in part to the venue: a famous historical, cultural and environmental site in the Białowieża forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Centre in eastern Poland. Lectures are given in the Nature and Forest Museum, and local traditions are interwoven with the scientific activities.

This collection of cutting-edge articles on vector bundles and related topics originated from a CMI workshop, held in October 2006, that brought together a community indebted to the pioneering work of P. E. Newstead, visiting the United States for the first time since the 1960s. Moduli spaces of vector bundles were then in their infancy, but are now, as demonstrated by this volume, a powerful tool in symplectic geometry, number theory, mathematical physics, and algebraic geometry. In fact, the impetus for this volume was to offer a sample of the vital convergence of techniques and fundamental progress, taking place in moduli spaces at the outset of the twenty-first century. This volume contains contributions by J. E. Andersen and N. L. Gammelgaard (Hitchin's projectively flat connection and Toeplitz operators), M. Aprodu and G. Farkas (moduli spaces), D. Arcara and A. Bertram (stability in higher dimension), L. Jeffrey (intersection cohomology), J. Kamnitzer (Langlands program), M. Lieblich (arithmetic aspects), P. E. Newstead (coherent systems), G. Pareschi and M. Popa (linear series on Abelian varieties), and M. Teixidor i Bigas (bundles over reducible curves). These articles do require a working knowledge of algebraic geometry, symplectic geometry and functional analysis, but should appeal to practitioners in a diversity of fields. No specialization should be necessary to appreciate the contributions, or possibly to be stimulated to work in the various directions opened by these path-blazing ideas; to mention a few, the Langlands program, stability criteria for vector bundles over surfaces and threefolds, linear series over abelian varieties and Brauer groups in relation to arithmetic properties of moduli spaces.

Grassmannians, Moduli Spaces and Vector Bundles

Our knowledge of objects of algebraic geometry such as moduli of curves, (real) Schubert classes, fundamental groups of complements of hyperplane arrangements, toric varieties, and variation of Hodge structures, has been enhanced recently by ideas and constructions of quantum field theory, such as mirror symmetry, Gromov-Witten invariants, quantum cohomology, and gravitational descendants. These are some of the themes of this refereed collection of papers, which grew out of the special session, ``Enumerative Geometry in Physics,'' held at the AMS meeting in Lowell, MA, April 2000. This session brought together mathematicians and physicists who reported on the latest results and open questions; all the abstracts are included as an Appendix, and also included are papers by some who could not attend. The collection provides an overview of state-of-the-art tools, links that connect classical and modern problems, and the latest knowledge available.
