Arter initiates a new publication series, Arter Background, to accompany group exhibitions drawn from its collection, which holds more than 1,300 works of art as of 2019. This first book of the series accompanies one of the opening exhibitions of Arter’s new building, a collection-based group exhibition entitled What Time Is It?. Curated by Emre Baykal and Eda Berkmen, the exhibition is conceived around the concepts of memory, space and time. In the book, excerpts of texts selected around the ideas active in the curatorial process are complemented by new essays written specifically for this context, in line with Arter’s mission of encouraging artistic and cultural production. It thus features texts on themes associated with houses, everyday objects, personal and collective histories, inside and outside, urban rhythms, architecture, archaeology, borders and migration, and includes commissioned essays by Erdem Ceylan, Deniz Gül, Gökhan Kodalak, and Nil Sakman. While close-up visual excerpts taken from the art works are cited side by side with the texts, the installation views from the exhibition assume their places as the first entries into the memory of Arter’s new space. What Time Is It?

Arter Publications’ extended programme includes the launch of two new series which accompany the opening of the institution’s new building in Dolapdere: the first is entitled Arter Close-Up and offers a closer look into a selected work from its collection; which contains more than 1,300 works as of 2019. The Close-Up series starts its journey with Sarkis’s iconic work Çaylak Sokak - an artwork that is deemed to be one of the turning points in the history of contemporary art in Turkey. The artwork, which was first exhibited at the Maçka Art Gallery in 1986, and then took part in the Wizards of the Earth exhibition at the Centre Pompidou in Paris in 1989, bears the same name as the street in the Talimhane district of Istanbul where Sarkis was born and raised. It is displayed once more as part of the exhibition What Time Is It? opened at the Arter’s new building in Dolapdere. Authored by Emre Baykal, the chief curator of Arter, Çaylak Sokak offers not only a multilayered reading of Sarkis’ work in different contexts intertwined with political and cultural history but also provides a personal journey constructed around the work itself. The book, designed by Esen Karol, takes a journey into the artist’s personal history accompanied by photographs taken by Hadiye Cangökçe.

Sarkis: Çaylak Sokak

Arter, 2019 itibarıyla 1.300’den fazla yapıt barındıran koleksiyonundan düzenlenen sergilere eşlik etmek üzere yeni bir yayın dizisi başlatıyor: Arter Arka Plan. Dizinin bu ilk kitabı, Arter’in açılış sergilerinden biri olan Saat Kaç? başlıklı koleksiyon grup sergisine eşlik ediyor. Kitapta, küratörler Emre Baykal ve Eda Berkmen’in bellek, mekân ve zaman kavramları etrafında oluşturdukları serginin arka planındaki düşüncelerden hareketle seçilip özgün bir kurguyla biraraya getirilen metin parçalarına ve Arter’in sanatsal ve kültürel üretimi teşvik etme anlayışı doğrultusunda bu yayın için üretilmiş yeni yazılara yer veriliyor. Ev, gündelik nesneler, bireysel ve kolektif tarihler, içerisi/dışarısı, kentsel ritimler, mimari, arkeoloji, sınırlar ve göç temalarıyla ilintili metinlerin buluşturulduğu kitapta, Erdem Ceylan, Deniz Gül, Gökhan Kodalak ve Nil Sakman’ın Saat Kaç? bağlamında özel olarak kaleme aldıkları denemeler de ilk kez yayımlanıyor. Sergide yer verilen yapıtlardan alınan görsel detaylar metinlere eşlik ederken, son bölümdeki sergi görüntüleri ise, Arter’in yeni açılan mekânının belleğine işlenen ilk kayıtlar olarak bu kitaptaki yerlerini alıyorlar.
