Eric Gill

Born in 1882, Gill was an artist, letter carver, gadfly, polemicist, and social reformer. In 1925, he had started drawing alphabets and printing books, and in 1931, this plainspoken little book was a fustian and forceful argu- ment for common sense in design, composed for anyone remotely interested in the subtle and evolving challenge of the typographic arts. Set rag right, with tight word spacing, it is a model of composition. The text, like most of Gill's, is exasperating, exorbitant, and exciting. But Gill was, above all, a craftsman, whose work always reflected his philoso- phy and whose hand always followed his moral convictions.

It is evident that a major reassessment of Eric Gill is taking place, and while this process has begun for his sculpture and for his engravings, as yet his writings have remained inaccessible. A new generation, recognizing the necessity of an holistic view of life in which art, work, and spiritual values form a unity, stands to gain much from a re-examination of Gill's thought. Almost nothing of the material included in this anthology has been reprinted since his death in 1940. The anthology has been devised around 14 chapters in each of which extracts of various lengths from Gill's many books are arranged to give a concise and as near comprehensive as possible exposition of his thought. A long introduction relates Gill's thought to its roots in traditional doctrine and the English radical thinkers who were his masters, as well as an assessment of the validity and relevance of Gill's standpoint to contemporary conditions.

A prolific engraver, sculptor, letter-cutter and typographer, and a prominent figure in the development of British art, Eric Gill (1882-1940) chose to be remembered on his grave simply as a stone carver. He carved his first figural sculpture in 1909, and his distinctive, serene figures have since become familiar landmarks, appearing in numerous churches and on village war memorials, on buildings such as the BBC's Broadcasting House in London and in public and private collections throughout the world. The expressive simplicity of Eric Gill's sculpture derives in part from his practice of carving directly from the block, reviving a tradition largely neglected since the Middle Ages. From slender crucifixes and tender Madonnas to lithe animals and vuloptuous lovers, his figures overflow with what the critic Roger Fry identified as an "unquenchable will to live", a will which sprang from a deep conviction of the interdependence of the spiritual and the sensual sides of life."
