Although Shackleton's (1874-1922) epic expedition (which began in 1914) to reach the South Pole was a complete disaster when their ship, The Endurance, was crushed by ice and the crew was marooned, it was rescued from absurdity by his heroic, terrifying crossing of the Southern Ocean in a small boat to a whaling station on South Georgia. Through one of the greatest recorded feats of navigation and of leadership, he overcame almost impossible odds and rescued every one of his men from otherwise certain death.

Ernest Shackleton was an Anglo-Irish explorer who is famous for his Arctic voyages, and for being a total badass. He made a number of trips south, including one in which he and his team made it a 100 or so miles from the South Pole. This was the closest anyone had gotten, and Shackleton would be knighted for his efforts. Soon enough he adventured south again on what was called the the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition 1914-17. This disastrous and amazing tale is the focus of Shackleton's book South, a work of non-fiction whose thrilling adventure rivals the most vividly written fiction.After Shackleton's earlier voyages he had a knack for fundraising, so upon securing about $4M in today's money, he enlisted a crew of 56 men. The fated Endurance would be the main ship, while the vessels James Caird and Aurora would serve as support ships. Disaster struck the expedition when the Endurance became trapped in pack ice, and was slowly crushed before the shore parties could land.

As the first world war broke out across Europe, Shackleton's expedition to the South Pole became trapped by ice. Their ship, the Endurance, was crushed and the men were forced to survive in and escape from one of the world's most hostile environment. Traversing glaciers, scaling cliffs and crossing treacherous seas in open boats, all the time threatened by brutal cold and hunger, the men, through their own strength and Shackleton's leadership, all made it to safety. In 1911 Roald Amundsen beat Robert Falcon Scott to the South Pole, and Scott and his colleagues all died on the return journey. Ernest Shackleton, who had served with Scott on a previous expedition, decided that crossing Antarctica from sea to sea was the last great unattempted journey on the continent. On oublie qu'aux toutes premières années de ce siècle, le continent antarctique n'était repéré que sur une partie de son pourtour. L'une des théories des géographes d'alors voulait d'ailleurs que le pôle Sud fût situé non pas sur ce continent (qui n'était sans doute, pensait-on qu'un groupe d'îles) mais au milieu d'une mer, peut-être libre de glaces. Bref, la dernière tache blanche de la planète restait encore totalement à explorer. Après l'échec de la première expédition de Scott (1901), à laquelle il avait participé, le bouillant Shackleton vend tout ce qu'il possède, arme en 1908 un petit phoquier, le Nimrod et décide ni plus ni moins d'atteindre le pôle Sud avec les moyens du bord. Il y réussira presque...mais l'on n'aura pas la cruauté de révéler ici le détail de son ahurissante aventure : le lecteur qui est prêt à se plonger dans ces pages ne nous le pardonnerait pas. Qu'il nous suffise de dire que ceux qui ont déjà eu la bonne fortune de dévorer l'autre grand livre de Sir Ernest (L'Odyssée de l'Endurance, Phébus 1988) retrouveront dans celui-ci le même miracle : le pur souffle de l'aventure, en compagnie d'un homme qui ne pouvait respirer qu'à l'altitude de l'impossible.

Au début du siècle précédent, le pôle Sud constituait encore une des dernières terra incognita de la planète. Von Drygalski, Nordenskjöld, Charcot, Scott, tous avaient été vaincus par les glaces. Mais, à bord du Discovery de Scott, un homme se jure de revenir à la charge : le bouillant sir Ernest Shackleton. Il vend tout ce qu’il possède et arme en 1908 un petit phoquier. Un défi fou ? Des vents d’une violence inouïe, des températures extrêmes, la faim et des crevasses à chaque pas, voilà ce qui attend Shackleton et ses compagnons sous le soleil rasant du pôle.
