Ernst Weiss

The novel probes the relationship of a psychiatrist-narrator with a patient, A.H., who is suffering from hysterical blindness. The psychiatrist cures his patient's disability and A.H. goes on to lead a defeated Germany back to glory. The psychiatrist of the novel is then persecuted and imprisoned because A.H. had all the medical records destroyed.

The Eyewitness

Set in the idyllic landscape of rural Bohemia in the 1930s, this is the tragic love story of Jarmila, the village beauty, and a toy maker who falls under her siren spell. The wife of the far older local feather-merchant, Jarmila enjoys all the pleasures her husband's wealth can buy, yet still longs for true love which she hopes to find in her affair with the penniless toy-maker. When she conceives a child by him, he urges her to leave her husband for a life of love and freedom in New York. Guilt-ridden and suddenly facing a destitute life in a strange country, Jarmila refuses lo leave. Her devastated lover asks for one more meeting and tragedy ensues. The typescript of this novella was discovered recently at Prague University. Stefan Zweig, a friend of Ernst Weiss, believed it to be Weiss' best work.

Jarmila

Tra Praga e Berlino prossime alle epoche dei conflitti ma ancora inviolate, si svolge questo romanzo sul legame indissolubile tra l’amore e la musica. Vi compaiono personaggi memorabili: Franziska, uno dei ritratti letterari più riusciti di un grande talento musicale, ed Erwin (in cui Kafka credette di riconoscersi), uomo gradevole ma irrimediabilmente inetto, incapace di scegliere tra la protagonista, donna pragmatica, e l’opportunista Hedy, una giovane insicura, consumata dall’egoismo e dalle proprie insoddisfazioni. Un’opera che sa narrare i comportamenti selvaggi e irrazionali di coloro che smarriscono la ragione per i motivi più disparati – il diabete, il genio artistico, l’amore, le malattie veneree o la semplice incapacità di prendere decisioni. Apparso per la prima volta nel 1914, Franziska è uno dei lavori più significativi di Ernst Weiss, autore amatissimo da Kafka e la cui produzione merita di essere riscoperta nella sua totalità.
