EL MATADERO, CRÍTICA AL ROSISMO Echeverría a través de El matadero construido una crítica al rosismo identificando como “centro de la Federación” a una institución en el día al día los límites entre el animal y el humano se vuelven borrosos y problemáticos. El corazón de la Federación rosista aparece así como un carnaval bárbaro en el que rige la ley del más fuerte, está la muerte a la vuelta de la esquina, se habla mal, se come peor, no se tienen modales ni signos de buena educación, y en donde pensar distinto (y verso distinto) constituye riesgo de muerte. El unitario del relato, una caricatura tan extrema como la de los federales, muere por mostrar atrevidamente (en su atuendo y en su corte de pelo) que no adhiere a los principios de la Federación. Echeverría no era unitario. Sin embargo, pon en ese personaje mucho de lo que él y sus compañeros valoraban: la buena educación, la vestimenta arreglada de acuerdo con la moda europea, la valentía, la distancia de la plebe.
