The Backlands is a translation of Euclide da Cunha's work Os Sertoes, a non-fictional account of the War of Canudos in Brazil during the 1890s. The deadliest civil war in Brazilian history, the conflict was between the Brazilian government and a rebellious village of 30,000 Canudos living in the northeastern state of Bahia, led by Antonio Conselheiro, a religious zealot. Far from being simply an objective journalistic account, Da Cunha's story shows both the significance of this event and the complexities of Brazilian society.

Os sertões – marco fundamental nos estudos sobre a formação brasileira, ao lado de Casa-grande e senzala e Raízes do Brasil – foi escrito a partir de um trabalho jornalístico sobre a rebelião de Canudos, liderada por Antonio Conselheiro e duramente reprimida pelo governo. Baseada em teorias deterministas em voga na época, a obra aborda cientificamente a influência do meio sobre o homem, como mostra a própria estrutura dos capítulos: "A terra", "O homem", "A luta". Parte da riqueza do livro reside no fato de ele retratar a mudança de opinião do escritor que, movido por um espírito patriótico e republicano, via com maus olhos a revolta dos "fanáticos" defensores da monarquia, alinhando-se ao restante da elite letrada, que considerava a insurgência uma ameaça ao desenvolvimento brasileiro. Enviado para o interior da Bahia pelo jornal O Estado de S. Paulo, Euclides se defrontou com a realidade de famílias reunidas em torno de um líder messiânico, cujo movimento – crítico especialmente da precariedade da região – estava na iminência de ser massacrado. A experiência foi transformadora e teve como fruto um romance social que se tornou uma das maiores obras da literatura brasileira.
