Im heutigen Sprachgebrauch bezeichnet man eine Person oder eine Sache als janusköpfig, wenn sie zwei Seiten hat: eine Vorderseite und eine Rückseite, eine helle und eine dunkle, eine gute und eine böse. In diesem Band wird die Janusköpfigkeit von gut und böse diskutiert. Diese impliziert, dass weder Personen noch Sachverhalte einfachhin mit den Attributen gut oder böse belegt werden können. Es gibt diese Eindeutigkeit nicht. Menschen lassen sich nicht aufteilen in gute und böse und ihre Handlungen sind in der Folge nicht nur gut und nicht nur böse. Das zentrale Anliegen dieses Bandes ist es, der Frage nach gut und böse im wissenschaftlichen Diskurs verschiedener Disziplinen nachzugehen.

Friedrich Nietzsches Texte leben nach wie vor von ihrer Aktualität, einer Aktualität, die auch die eigene Person mit einschließt. So lauten für Nietzsche "Die persönlichsten Fragen der Wahrheit ‚Was ist Das eigentlich, was ich thue? Und was will gerade ich damit?'" Diese Fragen waren für ihn die Fragen der praktischen Wahrheit, an denen sich das eigene Handeln orientiert. Im Zentrum steht hierbei der "freie Geist". Immer aber betonte Nietzsche auch die Bedeutung des Körpers und der Gefühle, und hier knüpfen auch die Liebesgedichte von Viktoria Blau an.
