Quando nel 1974 Evan Hunter, ancora piú conosciuto con lo pseudonimo di Ed McBain, pubblicò un romanzo sulla storia della sua famiglia, la sorpresa per la critica americana fu grande. Perché decise di raccontare sé stesso attraverso il personaggio di Blind Ike, un pianista jazz cieco cresciuto nella comunità italoamericana di New York e diventato presto ricco e celebre. Ike, proprio come Hunter, scrittore e sceneggiatore di successo, aveva trovato in America le strade lastricate d’oro. In questo romanzo corale si racconta una saga familiare lunga ottant’anni che afferra il lettore sin dalle prime pagine e lo porta fino alla fine con un tema dominante: la musica, il jazz, il pianoforte. E Ike riesce a mostrarci un paese che non ha mai potuto vedere ma che descrive nella sua grandezza e nelle sue contraddizioni meglio di chiunque attraverso il filtro della musica. Molti anni fa, in un’intervista, Evan Hunter disse: «Ho scritto la storia della mia famiglia in un libro che, secondo me, è il piú bello che ho fatto finora, ma non è stato mai tradotto in italiano. L’ho intitolato Le strade d’oro, cioè le strade d’America nell’idea di chi era costretto ad abbandonare l’Italia». Ora questo libro esce finalmente in italiano. Qualcuno ha detto che attraverso le pagine di questo romanzo si potrebbe mettere a punto un corso sulla letteratura americana. Ed è proprio cosí. «A volte, nella mia casa sull’oceano, seduto davanti al fuoco ardente che la domestica ha acceso per me, sento il crepitio della legna e mi viene in mente il fuoco che Francesco Luigi Di Lorenzo aveva acceso il giorno di Natale del 1900, quando decise di venire in questo paese.
