This volume gathers the perspectives of teachers in higher education from all over the world on the topic of New Testament scholarship. The goal is to understand and describe the contexts and conditions under which New Testament research is carried out throughout the world. This endeavor should serve as a catalyst for new initiatives and the development of questions that determine the future directions of New Testament scholarship. At the same time, it is intended to raise awareness of the global dimensions of New Testament scholarship, especially in relation to its impact on socio-political debates. The occasion for these reflections are not least the present questions that have been posed with the corona pandemic and have received a focus on the "system relevance" of churches, which is openly questioned by the media. The church and theology must face this challenge. Towards that end, it is important to gather impulses and suggestions for the discipline from a variety of contexts in which different dimensions of context-related New Testament research come to the fore.

John's Transformation of Mark brings together a cast of internationally recognised biblical scholars to investigate the relationship between the gospels of Mark and John. In a significant break with the prevailing view that the two gospels represent independent traditions, the contributors all argue that John both knew and used the earlier gospel. Drawing on recent analytical categories such as social memory, 'secondary orality,' or 'relecture,' and ancient literary genres such as 'rewritten Bible' and bioi, the central questions that drive this volume focus on how John used Mark, whether we should speak of 'dependence,' 'familiarity with,' or 'reception,' and whether John intended his work to be a supplement or a replacement of Mark. Together these chapters mount a strong case for a reassessment of one of the key tenets of modern biblical criticism, and open up significant new avenues for further research.

Im vorliegenden Band sind Eve-Marie Beckers Arbeiten zur Person des Paulus und zu seiner literarischen Tätigkeit zusammengestellt. Besonderes Interesse gilt dabei dem Philipperbrief und seiner Rezeptions- und Wirkungsgeschichte bis zu Ernst Lohmeyer. Die Beiträge stehen im Zusammenhang der Kommentierung des Briefs für die Serie: "Meyers Kritisch-Exegetischer Kommentar (KEK)". Der Kommentar soll die wirkmächtige Auslegung von Ernst Lohmeyer (1928/1930) ersetzen. Vier der insgesamt sechzehn Aufsätze, die im vorliegenden Band zusammengestellt sind, wurden bisher nicht oder nicht auf Deutsch oder Englisch veröffentlicht, die übrigen zwölf Aufsätze sind zwischen 2005 und 2018 erschienen.

Philo of Alexandria and Flavius Josephus are amongst the most influential ancient writers. In his long scholarly career, Per Bilde (1939–2014) published various essays, studies and articles examining early Judaism and the historical Jesus from the angle of the work of Philo and Josephus. Many of the articles contain in-depth treatment of primary sources, and thus are of great value for scholars to come. The studies in this volume have yet been compiled by Per Bilde himself. They are now edited posthumously with contributions from Steve Mason (Groningen) and Mogens Müller (Copenhagen) responding to Bilde's work.

This volume brings together an international group of scholars on Mark and Paul, respectively, who reopen the question whether Paul was a direct influence on Mark. On the basis of the latest methods in New Testament scholarship, the battle over Yes and No to this question of literary and theological influence is waged within these pages. In the end, no agreement is reached, but the basic issues stand out with much greater clarity than before. How may one relate two rather different literary genres, the apostolic letter and the narrative gospel? How may the theologies of two such different types of writing be compared? Are there sufficient indications that Paul lies directly behind Mark for us to conclude that through Paul himself and Mark the New Testament as a whole reflects specifically Pauline ideas? What would the literary and theological consequences of either assuming or denying a direct influence be for our reconstruction of 1st century Christianity? And what would the consequences be for either understanding Mark or Paul as literary authors and theologians? How far should we give Paul an exalted a position in the literary creativity of the first Christians? Addressing these questions are scholars who have already written seminally on the issue or have marked positions on it, like Joel Marcus, Margaret Mitchell, Gerd Theissen and Oda Wischmeyer, together with a group of up-coming and senior Danish scholars from Aarhus and Copenhagen Universities who have collaborated on the issue for some years. The present volume leads the discussion further that has been taken up in: “Paul and Mark” (ed. by O. Wischmeyer, D. Sim, and I. Elmer), BZNW 191, 2013.

English summary: Eve-Marie Becker studies the Gospel according to Mark, seeing it as the earliest gospel, and places it in the context of Hellenistic historiography (Greek, Roman and early Jewish). She examines the dating and the assimilation of events in contemporary history and analyzes their chronological and their causal structure. This historiographical approach to Mark serves various purposes, among which are the establishment of the historical value of the pre-Markan sources and the traditions and the acknowledgement of the 'historiographical achievement' of the editor Mark. The author shows the literary cognation of the 'Gospel' genre, but also its special place in the history of the genre. German description: Das Markus-Evangelium wird in diesem Buch als fruheste Evangelienschrift betrachtet und in den Kontext hellenistischer Historiographie (griechisch, romisch und fruhjudisch) gestellt. Eve-Marie Becker untersucht es im Hinblick auf die Datierung und die Verarbeitung von zeitgeschichtlichen Ereignissen und die Verwendung von geschichtlichen und literarischen Quellen. Sie analysiert die Erzahlung von geschichtlichen Ereignissen in chronologischer und kausaler Ordnung und fragt nach der theologischen Deutung der Geschichte. Daruber hinaus behandelt sie die Gestaltung einer literarischen Gattung sui generis im Umfeld fruhkaiserzeitlicher Literatur. In the 20th century, the scholarly field of anthropology has become a lot more complex heuristically, methodically and hermeneutically. Therefore, modern research needs to answer arisen questions considering a wide range of disciplines: Sociology, Philosophy, Ethics and also Empirical Research. This volume is an interdisciplinary project within theology. Contributions seek to not only reflect the state of the art in anthropological research from a theological point of view, but also provide a theological interpretation of one virulent question: What is a Human?
