This book provides an outline for a multidisciplinary research agenda into urban ethics and offers insights into the various ways urban ethics can be configured. It explores practices and discourses through which individuals, collectives and institutions determine which developments and projects may be favourable for dwellers and visitors traversing cities. Urban Ethics as Research Agenda widens the lens to include other actors apart from powerful individuals or institutions, paying special attention to activists or civil society organizations that express concerns about collective life. The chapters provide fresh perspectives addressing the various scales that converge in the urban. The uniqueness of each city is, thus, enriched with global patterns of the urban. Local sociocultural characteristics coexist with global flows of ideas, goods and people. The focus on urban ethics sheds light on emerging spaces of human development and the ways in which ethical narratives are used to mobilize and contest them in terms of the good life. This timely book analyses urban ethical negotiations from social and cultural studies, particularly drawing on anthropology, geography, and history. This volume explores cultural, social and economic connections between the Americas and the South Pacific. It reaches beyond Sino-American collaborations to focus on rather neglected, and sometimes invisible, Southern linkages, asking how these connections originated and have developed over time, which local responses they have generated, and what impact these processes have in the region in terms of representational forms and strategies, new cultural practices, and empowerment of individuals in (post)colonial contexts. The volume also compares and contrasts intriguing parallels of politics and identity formation. By extending the focus beyond East Asia to the Southern Pacific region, including Island connections with the Americas, the volume provides a more comprehensive understanding of recent dynamics and shifting relations across the Pacific. By approaching the Transpacific Americas as an assemblage or relational space, which is created and becomes meaningful through multiple localities and their translocal connections, the book complicates the Euro-American distinction between "centre" and "rim". While the collection offers a distinctive geographical focus, it simultaneously emphasizes the translocal qualities of specific locations through their entanglements in transpacific assemblages within and across cultural, social and economic spheres. Furthermore, without neglecting the inextricable, historical dimension of anthropological perspectives, the focus is on the diverse and unexpected contemporary forms of cultural, social and economic encounters and engagements, and on (re)emerging Indigenous networks. Primarily based on empirical research, the volume explores face-to-face encounters, relations "from below," and transcultural interactions and relationships in, as well as ideas and conceptualizations of, cultural spaces across localities that have long been perceived as separate, but are indeed closely interconnected.

Erstmals im deutschsprachigen Raum gibt es mit diesem Handbuch ein Überblickswerk zu den rezenten indigenen Kulturen Mesoamerikas. Heutige Maya, Mixteken, Zapoteken und viele weitere autochthone Gemeinschaften sind einerseits Nachfahren der gleichnamigen vorkolonialen Kulturen, andererseits haben sie sich über die Jahrhunderte dynamisch weiterentwickelt und prägen die modernen Nationalstaaten der Region von Mexiko bis Nicaragua auf vielfältige Weise mit. In 32 Einzelkapiteln stellt das Handbuch die indigenen Kulturen Mesoamerikas aus zeitgeschichtlicher und ethnologischer Perspektive dar. Es greift aktuelle Entwicklungen auf und bietet ausgehend vom gegenwärtigen Stand empirischer Kulturforschung fachliche Orientierung für ein weiterführendes, vertiefendes Studium der Region. Das Handbuch gliedert sich in fünf Hauptteile. Der erste bietet eine kompakte Einführung unter Berücksichtigung altamerikanistischer und sprachwissenschaftlicher Aspekte. Es folgen zwei historische Teile, einer zur Geschichte ethnologischer Forschung in Mesoamerika und einer zur neuzeitlichen Geschichte der Region. Im vierten Teil werden anhand ethnographischer Einzelfälle zentrale Themenbereiche der Ethnologie Mesoamerikas vorgestellt. Der fünfte Teil ist überregionalen kulturellen Prozessen gewidmet, wie Revitalisierungs- und Autonomiebewegungen oder der wachsenden indigenen Medienproduktion.

Re-examining Mary Douglas' work on pollution and concepts of purity, this volume explores modern expressions of these themes in urban areas, examining the intersections of material and cultural pollution. It presents ethnographic case studies from a range of cities affected by globalization processes such as neoliberal urban policies, privatization of urban space, continued migration and spatialized ethnic tension. What has changed since the appearance of Purity and Danger? How have anthropological views on pollution changed accordingly? This volume focuses on cultural meanings and values that are attached to conceptions of 'clean' and 'dirty', purity and impurity, healthy and unhealthy environments, and addresses the implications of pollution with regard to discrimination, class, urban poverty, social hierarchies and ethnic segregation in cities.
