Rien apparemment de plus dissemblable que les œuvres de Federico Fellini et de Georges Simenon, rien apparemment de plus opposé que ces deux hommes. Comment de tels sentiments ont-ils bien pu naître entre eux ? " Carissimo Simenon - Mon cher Fellini " rassemble 20 années (1969 à 1989, date de la mort de Simenon) de la correspondance entre ces deux figures majeures du cinéma et de la littérature. Elle trouve son origine en 1960, lorsque le jury du Festival de Cannes, présidé par Georges Simenon, décerne à Federico Fellini la Palme d'Or pour son film La Dolce Vita. Mais elle commence " vraiment " en 1969, à la sortie de Satyricon, lorsque Fellini, au cours d'une interview, fait l'éloge de Simenon et établit un lien entre l'écriture de ses romans et l'élaboration de ses propres films. Simenon lui écrit alors pour le conforter dans cette idée et lui dire son admiration de toujours. Dès lors, leurs échanges tournent autour du geste de la création. Fellini se livre en toute confiance, fait part à son " aîné " de ses angoisses et de ses doutes, notamment à propos de Casanova et de La Cité des femmes. Très ému des résonances qui se font jour entre leurs deux univers, Simenon, âgé de dix-sept ans de plus que lui, peut lui communiquer une forme d'expérience et de sagesse. La rencontre organisée en février 1977 par l'Express, où Simenon interviewe Fellini à propos de son Casanova, complète cette correspondance.
