Tania Kovats

Drawing - both her own and other people's - is a key part of Kovats' practice. In 2007, she wrote The Drawing Book (Black Dog, 2007), and she has long been interested in what drawing can do. For her exhibition at The Fruitmarket Gallery she has made a new book. Believing that drawing is a mechanism for exploration as much as a tool for representation, Kovats brings together in the book drawings by map-makers, writers, shipbuilders, whalers, soldiers, sailors, artists, archaeologists, cartographers, scientists, uranographers, engineers and dreamers - a diverse selection united by the sense that in making the drawing they were looking for something. A selection of Kovats; own drawing and writing anchors the book which attempts to construct, in the artist's words, 'a portolan, a chart drawn at sea to guide a sailor from one safe harbour to the next.'

A collective adventure begun by a small group of intellectuals in Paris in the early 1920s, amongst them Max Ernst, Rene Magritte and Salvador Dali, its influence was felt through the rest of continental Europe and in Britain, the Americas, Mexico and Japan.

After a career spanning nearly half a centuury, Paula Rego is acknowledged to be one of the leading figurative artists at work today. Drawing on literature, fairy tales, myths, religious stories and the cartoons of Walt Disney, among other sources, she creates strongly narrative works imbued with a sense of subversive mystery. Writer and curator Fiona Bradley provides a key to understanding Rego's imagery through her searching account ogf the artist's life and working practices.

Jim Lambie

Jim Lambie's solo exhibition at The Fruitmarket Gallery is accompanied by a new publication that celebrates one of Lambie's most generous sculptures, a poetry club he established in Glasgow in 2012. Including poetry from John Giorno, Richard Hell, Liz Lochhead and Gerard Malanga among others, the book presents a sample of The Poetry Club, a rich assemblage of some of the people who, in Lambie's words, 'give us our dreams'.

Emma Hart

We have published this major new book to accompany the exhibition. As well as looking back over Hart's career, it includes installation photography of the new work made for the show, and new writing by Fruitmarket director Fiona Bradley, Director of Tate Liverpool Helen Legg, and artist and filmmaker Sarah Wood. We are particularly delighted that writer Ali Smith has written a new short story for the book, inspired by visits to Emma Hart's studio during the making of BANGER.
