This innovative volume investigates the meaning of ‘something’ in different recent philosophical traditions in order to rethink the logic and the unity of ontology, without forgetting to compare these views to earlier significative accounts in the history of philosophy. In fact, the revival of interest in “something” in the 19th and 20th centuries as well as in contemporary philosophy can easily be accounted for: it affords the possibility for asking the question: what is there? without engaging in predefined speculative assumptions The issue about “something” seems to avoid any naive approach to the question about what there is, so that it is treated in two main contemporary philosophical trends: “material ontology”, which aims at taking “inventory” of what there is, of everything that is; and “formal ontology”, which analyses the structural features of all there is, whatever it is. The volume advances cutting-edge debates on what is the first et the most general item in ontology, that is to say “something”, because the relevant features of the conceptual core of something are: non-nothingness, otherness. Something means that one being is different from others. The relationality belongs to something.: Therefore, the volume advances cutting-edge debates in phenomenology, analytic philosophy, formal and material ontology, traditional metaphysics.

Contre l'historiographie dominante, qui réduit le Décaméron à un projet poétique en langue vernaculaire, marqué par le principe de plaisir, ou à l'expression d'un parcours chrétien du vice à la vertu, cet essai propose une interprétation philosophique de l'oeuvre de Boccace. Ses nouvelles sont une " expérience de pensée " sur les conséquences extrêmes, voire l'échec, de l'introduction de l'utilité, de l'intérêt et de l'amour-propre dans l'éthique. L'économie des passions, le calcul entre le dû et le don, la recherche d'un surcroît minent la morale de la " grande âme ", caractérisée par la générosité et la magnificence. Contre cette logique, Boccace oppose le désintéressement et la désappropriation de soi des personnages des derniers récits. Son interprétation se caractérise par l'interrogation sur la vertu, empruntée à Cicéron et à Sénèque, mais reprise par les milieux laïques des cours italiennes, qui a revendiqué la place des biens secondaires (comme la renommée, le pouvoir ou la richesse) dans la réalisation de la sagesse et de la félicité. Cette approche philosophique, qui lie étroitement la réflexion morale à la forme poétique de la nouvelle, est inédite, et non seulement en France. Elle comble également un vide, puisque les deux autres grands poètes du XIVe siècle italien, Dante et Pétrarque, ont été récemment réintégrés dans l'histoire de la philosophie médiévale.

Lange als rein rezipierende und damit zu vernachlässigende Vertreter der antiken Philosophie angesehen, werden die philosophischen Werke von Römern inzwischen als ernstzunehmende Stimmen der von ihnen gepflegten hellenistischen Lehren wahrgenommen. Aus kultur- und bildungsgeschichtlicher Perspektive wird zudem vermehrt nach den Eigenheiten philosophischer Betätigung in Rom gefragt. Prägt diese Fragestellung inzwischen auch die Auseinandersetzung mit den einzelnen Autoren, sind Initiativen weiterhin rar, die solche autor- und werkbezogene Ansätze vergleichend aufeinander beziehen und zu einem Gesamtbild der Philosophie in Rom zusammenführen. Ausgehend von dem inzwischen akzeptierten Befund, dass die aus Griechenland importierte Philosophie in Rom signifikante Veränderungen und Weiterentwicklungen erfahren hat, nähert sich der Sammelband den zentralen römischen Autoren und Trägergruppen in komparatistischer Perspektive und fragt danach, welche Konsequenzen die spezifischen kulturellen Verständnisbedingungen in Rom für deren Auseinandersetzung mit der Philosophie hatten. Auf diese Weise entwirft er philosophie- und kulturgeschichtliche Kriterien, die die philosophischen Bemühungen von Römern als dezidiert römisch erkennbar machen.
