Godwin’in Ay’daki Adam’ı basım yılından eserin türüne, içerdiği dil ve zaman unsurlarından kiliseye, dönemin Dünya merkezli sisteminden Kopernik’e kadar çok tartışma yaratan bir hikâye. Ay’daki Adam yazıldığı zaman, gökbilimsel gözlemlerin gelişmesiyle yüzyıllardır hüküm süren Dünya merkezli evren fikrinin sallantıya uğradığı ve evrende Dünya dışında bir ev bulunup bulunamayacağının, eğer bulunursa da içinde bulunulan çağın hâkim fikirlerinin bu keşfi ne şekilde karşılayacağının tartışıldığı bir zaman. Godwin bu sürükleyici öyküsünü Kopernik Devrimi’nin baş gösterdiği ve erken Rönesans’ın yükseldiği, bilimin alışılmış rotasını terk edip yenilikçi fikirlere yelken açtığı bir zamanın etkisiyle yazar. Bu kitap yazıldığı sırada Galileo ve Kepler daha ölmemiştir, Newton ise doğmamıştır bile. Eserin yazıldığı dönemde, dolayısıyla, dünya merkezli evren teoremi daha tam olarak reddedilmemiştir. Buna rağmen öngörüsü yüksek bu metin, o dönemde kitlelerin hayal gücünde neler olup bittiğine de ışık tutabilir. Güneş merkezli sistemin hızla kabul görmesi, bilimsel çalışmaların kültürel alandaki tesirinin bu denli yüksek olması, gerçekten ilgi uyandırıcıdır. Bir bilgi daha vermek gerekirse, Godwin, “Ay’daki Adam” öyküsüyle edebiyat çizgisinde ciddi bir etki bıraktığı yazar Jonathan Swift’in büyük amcasıdır. Jonathan Swift’in, Güliver’in Gezileri’ni onun Ay’daki Adam’ından esinlenerek yazdığı düşünülmektedir. 1638’de basımı gerçekleşmiş, tarihin belki de ilk bilimkurgu kitabı olarak değerlendirilebilinecek çalışmasını Fihrist olarak Türkçede ilk defa yayımlıyor olmaktan mutluyuz.

Ay'daki Adam

Arguably the first work of science fiction in English, Francis Godwin’s The Man in the Moone was published in 1638, pseudonymously and posthumously. The novel, which tells the story of Domingo Gonsales, a Spaniard who flies to the moon by geese power and encounters an advanced lunar civilization, had an enormous impact on the European imagination for centuries after its initial publication. With its discussion of advanced ideas about astronomy and cosmology, the novel is an important example of both popular fiction and scientific speculation. The Man in the Moone

Written in 1638, The Man in the Moone was one of the earliest science fiction books and an important influence on the development of the genre. In it the narrator Domingo Gonsales reaches the moon by accident when the trained swans pulling his flying machine proceed on their annual lunar migration. Highly imaginative and entertaining throughout.
