Pubblicato nel 1934 dopo quasi dieci di stesure e diverse rielaborazioni, il romanzo conobbe una strana vicenda editoriale. Fitzgerald difatti, convinto di avere commesso un errore strutturale, raccontando “il vero inizio” retrospettivamente, decise di rimettere mano alla struttura del libro, riordinando gli eventi in senso cronologico sulla sua copia cartacea. Pur pubblicata nel 1948, questa versione sarebbe stata in seguito dichiarata “apocrifa”, per infine ritornare alla versione del 1934. Il libro, come un grande affresco, abbonda di episodi e personaggi, ma ha al centro la vicenda di corruzione morale dei coniugi Diver. Lui, Dick, psichiatra, incontra nel corso della sua attività clinica una giovane donna, Nicole Warren, sofferente di manie di persecuzione per aver avuto rapporti incestuosi con il padre. Nonostante il parere contrario di molti suoi colleghi, decide di sposarla, ripromettendosi di “restaurarle l’universo”. Passano alcuni anni, lui, godendo della ricchezza della moglie, progressivamente perde interesse per la sua attività professionale. Si ritrovano sulla Costa azzurra assieme a una strana coorte di personaggi, alcuni dei quali innamorati della donna. Tra questi una giovane interessata invece a Dick, Rosemary. Sarà la “storia” che fa precipitare il precario equilibrio della coppia. Un libro bellissimo in cui i grandi temi di Fitzgerald: la felicità, lo spreco, il fascino, il danaro trovano il loro scenario più adatto, in un contesto linguistico fastoso e spettrale.

The author rented the "la Paix" estate in the suburb of Towson to work on this book, the story of the rise and fall of Dick Diver, a promising young psychoanalyst and his wife, Nicole, who is also one of his patients. It would be Fitzgerald's first novel in nine years, and the last that he would complete. While working on the book he several times ran out of cash and had to borrow from his editor and agent, and write short stories for commercial magazines. The early 1930s, when Fitzgerald was conceiving and working on the book, were certainly the darkest years of his life, and accordingly, the novel has its bleak elements.It should also be noted that two versions of this novel are in print. The first version, published in 1934, uses flashbacks whilst the second revised version, prepared by Fitzgerald's friend and noted critic Malcolm Cowley on the basis of notes for a revision left by Fitzgerald, is ordered chronologically; this version was first published posthumously in 1951. Critics have suggested that Cowley's revision was undertaken due to negative reviews of the temporal structure of the book on its first release.The title is taken from the poem "Ode to a Nightingale" by John Keats.
