Er is sprake van slavernij op de Wallen. Door het toedoen van zogenaamde loverboys zouden veel goedgelovige meisjes in een val zijn beland. Ze zouden gedwongen achter het raam zitten, als bezit van een loverboy, wiens naam boven hun billen staat getatoeerd. Een lastig probleem, want nu prostitutie legaal is geworden, lijkt er weinig tegen dit onrecht te beginnen. Frank Bovenkerk neemt in Loverboys het schrijnende verschijnsel onder een kritische loep. Bestaan ze eigenlijk wel? Het beeld van loverboys die in een mooie auto bij schoolpleinen staan te wachten om onschuldige meisjes met cadeaus te lokken, blijkt na enig onderzoek niet echt te kloppen. Maar ander onderzoek leverde wel degelijk iets op. Tijdens nachtelijke observatierondes op de Wallen bleek dat er nogal wat meisjes zijn die door hun Marokkaanse of Antilliaanse vriendjes de prostitutie zijn ingejaagd; meisjes die opmerkelijk vaak een zelfde achtergrond lijken te hebben. In dit baanbrekende onderzoek komen nieuwe schokkende inzichten aan de orde. Zijn de meisjes wel zulke slachtoffers als altijd beweerd wordt, of spelen zij een actievere rol? Wat heeft de t.v.-clipscultuur van pimps en hos en de veranderende seksuele moraal hiermee te maken? Zijn de loverboys eigenlijk geen gewone souteneurs? En wordt hun handelwijze door hun allochtone achtergrond verklaard?
