The Torch of Liberty features several Greek stories highlighting the development of democracy. The illustrations in this volume are by Kreigh Collins (1908-1974) who created the comic strip hero Kevin the Bold, and whose papers are collected by the library of Syracuse University. Frederic Arnold Kummer (1873-1943) was the son of a German emigrant who fought in the Civil War and helped found Kummer & Becker, the Baltimore banking firm who were agents for the North German Lloyd Steamship Line. In 1917 he wrote The Film of Fear, the earliest known novel with a motion picture theme. Three years later he wrote the lyrics for "My Golden Girl" a popular Broadway comedy with music by Victor Herbert. Kummer's other titles included The Green God (1911, Ladies in Hades: A Story of Hell's Smart Set (1928) and Gentlemen in Hades: The Story of a Damned Debutante (1930). His first wife, Clare Rodman Beecher (1873-1958) was a composer and songwriter who worked with Sigmund Romberg and Jerome Kern. His son by his second wife, Marjorie McLean-Frederic Arnold Kummer Jr.-became a science fiction writer. The collaboration of Kummer and Collins was well reviewed when it first appeared: "There have been a number of books on somewhat similar pattern - a collection of short stories designed to highlight periods in world history when the significance of freedom came to the fore. Janet Marsh's Don't Tread on Me, is an example. But this, though inevitably there is some overlapping, is far and away the best one that has been done. One traces the different aspects under which democracy has appeared from early Greeks to modern America, Good stories all."

The Torch of Liberty

Frederic Arnold Kummer (August 5, 1873-November 22, 1943) was an American author, playwright and screen writer. Born in Maryland, he studied engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and worked as an engineer before turning to writing in 1907. He wrote in a variety of genres including romances and non-fiction. Under the pseudonym Arnold Fredericks he wrote a series of mysteries featuring the detective Richard Duvall. In the 1930's he turned to writing science fiction. In addition to his short stories and novels he was also a screen writer during the early days of motion pictures. On a curious note, shortly after his death during World War II he had a Liberty ship was named after him.

The Second Coming: A Vision (1916 chap) with Henry P Jane's is a World War I fantasy in which Christ appeals for peace to the Kaiser. FAN also wrote two Afterlife fantasies, Ladies in Hades: A Story of Hell's Smart Set (1928) and Gentlemen in Hades: The Story of a Damned Debutante (1930).

I was absolutely dumb with amazement. Undeniably there before me lay the cause of Mr. Ash ton's death, yet how it came to be in that cake of soap, and what light its presence there threw upon the manner of his sudden and tragic end, was beyond my comprehension. At least, however, I understood why Li Min had tried to make away with my satchel, but the fact that the presence of the jewel among my belongings might cause suspicion to point in my direction did not for the moment occur to me. It evidently did, however, to McQueen, as I before long had reason to know. The kneeling priest rose to his feet with a glad cry, and, holding the image reverently in the hollow of his two hands, advanced toward the altar, the others crowding closely about him. Arrived at the shrine, he placed the figure carefully upon its pedestal within the golden casket, and, as the light of many candles fell full upon it, the whole crowd knelt down and began a weird sing-song prayer, that must have been a chant of joy, or some service of purification, now that their long-lost deity had been returned to them. Frederic Arnold Kummer Sr. was an American author, playwright and screenwriter. He also wrote under the pseudonym Arnold Fredericks. Several of his works were made into films. A caricature of him is on the wall of Sardi's restaurant. He lived in Maryland. The dull October afternoon was rapidly drawing to a close as I passed through the village of Pinhoe, and set my steps rather wearily toward Exeter. I had conceived the idea, some time before, of walking from London to Torquay, partly because I felt the need of the exercise and fresh air, and partly because I wanted to do some sketching in the southwest counties. Perhaps had I realized, when I started out, what manner of adventure would befall me in the neighborhood of the town of Exeter, I should have given that place a wide berth. As matters now stood, my chief concern at the moment was to decide whether or not I could reach there before the impending storm broke.

He was bronzed and rugged with the mark of the traveler upon him, and although his face at first impressed me unpleasantly, the im pression was dispelled in part at least by his peculiarly attractive smile.
