Ce livre est le premier d'une série de trois volumes consacrés aux Mangyans alangans de Siapo, un village situé sur l’île de Mindoro, aux Philippines. Les kuyay (les aînés), y présentent des aspects importants de leurs traditions mythologiques, en particulier la création du monde et celle des humains, mais aussi leurs savoirs sur des animaux, comme les oiseaux, les insectes et autres petites bestioles, les rampants, sans oublier leurs esprits-maîtres. Avec les ninunos, des êtres invisibles, les Mangyans se présentent comme les gardiens de la terre et en appellent discrètement à la préservation des environnements, convaincus du fait que l’humain n’est rien sans des solidarités interspécifiques. L’ouvrage comporte des informations recueillies en 2012 et lors de plusieurs ateliers de transmission des savoirs organisés avec eux en 2017, 2018 et 2019, et transcrites en alangan, en tagalog et en français. Le projet a bénéficié d’appuis financiers de la part: du Conseil de recherche en sciences humaines du Canada et, surtout, du Fonds National de la Recherche Scientifique (FNRS, Belgique; F. 6002.17), et du projet PRD «Local Adaptation, Resilience & Interpretation of Socio-Natural Hazards, and Environment Management in the Philippines (2014–2019)».

Les kuyay (les aînés) y présentent des aspects importants de leurs savoirs, en particulier sur les arbres, les plantes et les champignons dont ils font de nombreux usages, y compris thérapeutiques. Ils décrivent les chauves-souris qui leur procurent beaucoup de vitalité. Pour les Alangans, la nature n’existe pas en soi comme un objet autonome, elle constitue le monde dans lequel ils vivent. La préservation de l’environnement n’est pensable qu’en vivant au contact des plantes et des animaux, et en respectant les multiples non-humains qui peuplent la forêt. Les Alangans enseignent que l’humain n’est rien s’il ne prend pas la mesure des solidarités interspécifiques, s’il ne respecte pas des interdits de base, et s’il ignore les esprits-maîtres ainsi qu’Amang sa Ugbos. L’ouvrage comporte le verbatim de conversations et d’informations recueillies lors de plusieurs ateliers de transmission des savoirs organisés avec les Alangans de Siapo en 2012, 2017, 2018 et 2019. Le livre est disponible en deux versions: en français et en alangan-tagalog. Apostle to the Inuit presents the journals and ethnographical notes of Reverend Edmund James Peck, an Anglican missionary who opened the first mission among the Inuit of Baffin Island in 1894. He stayed until 1905, and by that time, had firmly established Christianity in the North. He became known to the Inuit as 'Uqammaq,' the one who talks well. His colleagues knew him as 'Apostle among the Eskimo.' Peck's diaries of the period focus on his missionary work and the adoption of Christianity by the Inuit and provide an impressive account of the daily life and work of the early missionaries in Baffin Island. His ethnographic data was collected at the request of famed anthropologist Franz Boas in 1897. Peck conducted extensive research on Inuit oral traditions and presents several detailed verbatim accounts of shamanic traditions and practises. This work continues to be of great value for a better understanding of Inuit culture and history but was never before published. Apostle to the Inuit demonstrates how a Christian missionary who was bitterly opposed to shamanism, became a devoted researcher of this complex tradition. Editors Frédéric Laugrand, Jarich Oosten, and François Trudel highlight the relationships between Europeans and Inuit and discuss central issues facing native peoples and missionaries in the North. They also present a selection of fascinating drawings made by Inuit at the request of Peck, which illustrate Inuit life on Baffin Island at the turn of the twentieth century. The book offers important new data on the history of the missions among the Inuit as well as on the history of Inuit religion and the anthropological study of Inuit oral traditions.

Inuit hunting traditions are rich in perceptions, practices and stories relating to animals and human beings. The authors examine key figures such as the raven, an animal that has a central place in Inuit culture as a creator and a trickster, and qupirruit, a category consisting of insects and other small life forms. After these non-social and inedible animals, they discuss the dog, the companion of the hunter, and the fellow hunter, the bear, considered to resemble a human being. A discussion of the renewal of whale hunting accompanies the chapters about animals considered ‘prey par excellence’: the caribou, the seals and the whale, symbol of the whole. By giving precedence to Inuit categories such as ‘inua’ (owner) and ‘tarniq’ (shade) over European concepts such as ‘spirit ‘and ‘soul’, the book compares and contrasts human beings and animals to provide a better understanding of human-animal relationships in a hunting society.
