Taking as its point of departure the alleged inaccuracy of the chronicles of Matthew Paris, "Hubert's Arthur" presents an alternative retelling of English history from the point of view of Hubert de Burgh. In Hubert's narrative, which begins with an account of the struggle for succession in the wake of King Richard Lionheart's death, young Duke Arthur of Brittany does not die at the hands of King John, but instead ascends to the throne. Hubert relates Arthur's adventures as he combats the wily John, fights in the Crusades, and wages battle against the treacherous Simon de Montfort, before facing perhaps his greatest challenge when his reign is threatened by the crucifixions of young Christian boys. Penned by the brilliant but eccentric Frederick Rolfe (who styled himself Baron Corvo) whilst he was starving and homeless in a self-imposed exile in Venice, "Hubert's Arthur," first published posthumously in 1935, is one of the strangest and most remarkable novels of the twentieth century. Filled with action and suffused throughout with Rolfe's characteristic humor, the novel is notable for its blatant homoeroticism, its savage anti-Semitism, and its shockingly graphic violence. This edition features a new scholarly introduction by Kristin Mahoney, who also provides detailed annotations to help guide readers through Rolfe's labyrinth of historical and literary references and his unique vocabulary of archaic words, some of which have not been used since the sixteenth century. Consumato da anni di speranze non soddisfatte, smarrito dinanzi alla rovina del mondo («Le antiche monarchie legittime sono dovunque in declino, e Demos è pronta ad inghiottirle nelle sue fauci vili», ama dire al suo gatto, declamando D’Annunzio), vive nella povertà più assoluta, non confortata da alcuna sacerdotale parvenza di santità. George Arthur Rose è un prete mancato. Per oscure ragioni – invereconde calunnie, atroci oltraggi, secondo lui, di giovinetti immaturi – è stato brutalmente espulso dal Saint Andrews, il Pontificio Collegio Scozzese di Roma. Bandito dalla Chiesa cattolica, come una spina, una peste, un’ulcera corrosiva e purulenta, Rose ha reagito abbracciando di proposito la sua nefasta fama: si è messo a posare a genio altero, sottile, dotto, inaccessibile. Di lì a poco le imperscrutabili vie della Provvidenza schiuderanno l’impensabile: dopo un’ulteriore seduta del conclave in cui l’intransigenza e l’equivalenza delle fazioni vieteranno una nomina regolare, il collegio dei «Compromissari» eleggerà sul soglio di Pietro proprio lui, George Arthur Rose, l’antico reietto, che prenderà il nome di Adriano VII e, più inflessibile di Bonifacio VIII, salverà l’Europa dal caos e dall’anarchia e ridisegnerà i confini del mondo. Pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1904, e da allora oggetto di un vero e proprio culto, Adriano VII è un romanzo che, come tutte le grandi opere, si presta a infinite interpretazioni: può essere visto come una profetica anticipazione dei totalitarismi del Ventesimo secolo, come il libro di un impudente profanatore (secondo Giorgio Manganelli la Chiesa era, per Rolfe, il luogo da profanare, dato che solo Iddio poteva dargli l’indirizzo del Diavolo), come l’estremo, meraviglioso frutto di un’esistenza eccentrica. Ripubblicato ora, nel centenario della morte dell’autore, l’opera svela tutta la sua sorprendente, sfrontata attualità.
