How art has addressed and transmuted trauma over the past half-century, from Louise Bourgeois to Glenn Ligon Trauma in all its forms--internal and external, individual and collective--has been an enduring theme in 20th- and 21st-century art. The proliferation of violent imagery, particularly since the expansion of mass media during and after World War II, has led to artworks that marshal consciousness of traumatic events and their cultural processing. These developments in art run parallel with the emergence of trauma studies, which confront the repercussions of traumatic events: the Holocaust, global conflict, sexual violence, systemic racism and gender discrimination. Psychic Wounds brings together artists from the mid-20th century to the present who have addressed trauma in their work. The book also contains an anthology of critical writings on trauma by curators, art historians and theorists, among them Robert Storr, Griselda Pollock, Huey Copeland and Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev. Artists include: Gerhard Richter, Kazuo Shiraga, Louise Bourgeois, Kiki Smith, Glenn Ligon, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Carrie Mae Weems, Cindy Sherman, Bruce Nauman and Anicka Yi.

G�nther F�rg (1952-2013) was a German painter, sculptor, and photographer with an irreverent approach to abstraction. F�rg's project tackled the latent instability between image and reality. His painterly surfaces may appear exquisitely sensitive, his installations elegantly precise, but these are mastered and executed with a cold detachment. His deft manipulations of the languages of abstraction obscured a darker message. This publication, the most comprehensive to date, offers an important new understanding of this extraordinary and complex artist. For Gerhard Richter (born 1932), the category of drawing covers a multitude of techniques, including graphite, ballpoint, ink, colored ink and watercolor on paper. Throughout his career, drawings have appeared in series that sometimes only consist of a few works: in the 1960s, representational and mechanical drawings from projected photographs; in the 1970s, abstract drawings; in the 1980s, drawings of people and objects; and in the 1990s, both figurative and abstract ink drawings. Nonetheless, Richter notoriously once expressed disdain for drawing's vaunted guarantee of authenticity and virtuosity--in part from his insistent and complete commitment to painting. Drawing therefore sits at a fascinating angle to his painting, and provides an arena for aspects of his thinking that rarely surface in his painting. Lines Which Do Not Existwas published for the artist's Fall 2010 exhibition at The Drawing Center in New York--his first overview in a public institution in New York since 40 Years of Paintingat The Museum of Modern Art (2002). It presents more than 50 color reproductions of graphite, watercolor and ink on paper drawings made by Richter over a period of five decades, from 1966 to 2005.
