Karel de Grote (742-814), de illustere Frankische vorst die in 1165, ruim driehonderd na zijn dood, heilig werd verklaard, is uit vele middeleeuwse verhalen bekend. Hoewel hij altijd de rol van monarch vervult, wordt zijn personage wisselend neergezet. Soms verschijnt Karel als een daadkrachtig strijder en aanvoerder, soms als een twijfelaar en een enkele keer zelfs als een despoot die zich door slechte raadgevers laat misleiden. In Karel ende Elegast zien we hem in een opmerkelijke dubbelrol: de grote koning speelt - in opdracht van God - voor dief. Maar door aan het goddelijke gebod te gehoorzamen krijgt Karel de gelegenheid om de trouw van twee van zijn vazallen te toetsen. Hij ontdekt dat de verbannen Elegast hem altijd trouw is gebleven en ten onrechte te zwaar is gestraft en dat hij de verraderlijke vazal ten onrechte heeft vertrouwd. Door deze ontdekking kan hij een aanslag op zijn leven voorkomen en ervoor zorgen dat ieder krijgt wat hij verdient. De Alfa-reeks omvat Poëzie, proza en toneel uit verschillende eeuwen en van verschillende auteurs. De reeks richt zich in eerste instantie op eerste- en tweedejaars studenten Nederlands, maar is ook bedoeld voor een in literatuur geïnteresseerd publiek. De teksten zijn, waar nodig, door deskundigen van commentaar en woordverklaringen voorzien.

This voluminous book, which is a Festschrift in honour of Prof. Dr. Karel Porteman, contains 56 articles on the relationship between literature and the visual arts in the Low Countries. Visual culture is interpreted in the largest possible sense to reflect the wide range of topics and interests Karel Porteman specialized in. All sorts of bi-medial genres in the strictest sense (emblems, picture poems, frontispieces, illustrated broadsheets, ...) allign with visual aspects of other literary genres, including theater. The Arthurian myth is one of the most fundamental and abiding ones of Western culture. The legend of King Arthur and his knights was no less popular in the medieval Low Countries than it was anywhere else in medieval Europe. It gave rise to a varied corpus of Middle Dutch Arthurian verse romances, most of which are contained in a single manuscript, the so-called Lancelot Compilation of MS The Hague, KB, 129 A10. This manuscript of the early fourteenth century contains a cycle of verse narratives that rivals in its scope and thematic concerns the better known Old French Vulgate Cycle of Arthurian tales and Sir Thomas Malory's Morte D'Arthur. This volume contains new critical work on these and other Middle Dutch Arthurian romances, twelve studies by eleven established scholars in the field of Arthurian literature. In addition to this new scholarship, the volume is provided with an extensive introduction to the Arthurian literature of the medieval Low Countries, as well as summaries of all the extant Middle Dutch Arthurian texts. As such it should prove of interest to Arthurian specialists and enthusiasts alike, many of whom will discover a new body of Arthurian tales, at once both familiar and new, in a heretofore relatively neglected area of Arthurian studies.
