Woyzeck

Karl Georg Buchner (1813-1837) war ein deutscher Schriftsteller, Naturwissen-schaftler und Revolutionar. die Gesellschaft fur Menschenrechte, eine Geheimorganisation nach franzosischem Vorbild, deren Ziel ein Umsturz der politischen Verhaltnisse war. 1835 verfasste er nach eigenen Angaben innerhalb von funf Wochen Dantons Tod. 1834 wurde der Hessische Landbote, den Buchner verfasst hatte, in Druck gelegt. Es handelt sich um eine Flugschrift, die die hessische Landbevolkerung zur Revolution gegen die Unterdruckung aufrief. Buchner wurde dafur vernommen, aber nicht verhaftet. Im selben Jahr floh er nach Strassburg. Aufgrund seiner eingereichten Arbeit und der daran anschliessenden Probevorlesung wurde Georg Buchner die Doktorwurde der Universitat Zurich verliehen. Georg Büchner is regularly considered the father of modern German drama, and "Woyzeck" was his most influential work. Beneath the utter simplicity of its basic story, there are complex themes of human motivation, victimisation, guilt, class structure, and the meaning and nature of existence. Written in 1836, Woyzeck is often considered to be the first truly "modern" play. The story of a soldier driven mad by inhuman military discipline and acute social deprivation is told in splintered dialogue and jagged episodes which are as shocking and telling today as they were when first performed, almost a century after the author's death, in Munich 1913. This volume contains an introduction and notes by Michael Patterson. The introduction provides biographical background on Buchner, as well detail on the discovery of Woyzeck after so many years of it lying dormant as an apparently 'unreadable' manuscript. It also provides a brief analysis of the play, a study of the historical source that influenced Buchner, the tragic character of Woyzeck and his motivations, the social dimensions of the play, and notes on specific productions, and Mackendrick's translation. Lenz, Georg Büchner’s visionary exploration of an 18th-century playwright’s descent into madness, has been called the inception of European modernist prose. Elias Canetti considered this short novella one of the decisive reading experiences of his life, and writers as various as Paul Celan, Christa Wolff, Peter Schneider, and Gert Hofmann have paid homage to it in their works. Published posthumously in 1839, Lenz provides a taut case study of three weeks in the life of schizophrenic, perhaps the first third-person text ever to be written from the "inside" of insanity. An early experiment in docufiction, Büchner’s textual montage draws on the diary of J.F. Oberlin, the Alsatian pastor who briefly took care of Lenz in 1778, while also refracting Goethe’s memoir of his troubled friendship with the playwright — English versions of both of these historical source texts here accompany Lenz for the first time in this bilingual presentation.
