The Devil's Disciple

Pygmalion is a play by George Bernard Shaw, named after a Greek mythological figure. It was first presented on stage to the public in 1913. Professor of phonetics Henry Higgins makes a bet that he can train a bedraggled Cockney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, to pass for a duchess at an ambassador's garden party by teaching her to assume a veneer of gentility, the most important element of which, he believes, is impeccable speech. The play is a sharp lampoon of the rigid British class system of the day and a commentary on women's independence. In ancient Greek mythology, Pygmalion fell in love with one of his sculptures, which then came to life. The general idea of that myth was a popular subject for Victorian era English playwrights, including one of Shaw's influences, W. S. Gilbert, who wrote a successful play based on the story called Pygmalion and Galatea that was first presented in 1871. Shaw would also have been familiar with the burlesque version, Galatea, or Pygmalion Reversed. Shaw's play has been adapted numerous times, most notably as the musical My Fair Lady and its film version. Shaw mentioned that the character of Professor Henry Higgins was inspired by several British professors of phonetics: Alexander Melville Bell, Alexander J. Ellis, Tito Pagliardini, but above all, the cantankerous Henry Sweet.

Man and Superman is a four-act drama, written by George Bernard Shaw in 1903. The series was written in response to calls for Shaw to write a play based on the Don Juan theme.Although Man and Superman can be performed as a light comedy of manners, Shaw intended the drama to be something much deeper, as suggested by the title. This title comes from Friedrich Nietzsche's philosophical ideas about the "Übermensch" ("Superman"). The plot centres on John Tanner, author of "The Revolutionist's Handbook and Pocket Companion". Tanner is a confirmed bachelor despite the pursuits of Ann Whitefield and her persistent efforts to entice him to marry her. Ann is referred to as "the Life Force" and represents Shaw's view that in every culture, it is the women who force the men to marry them rather than the men who take the initiative.

This catalogue, published alongside the exhibition, The Aerodrome (Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, 12 June - 8 September 2019) is dedicated to the memory and curatorial achievements of Michael Stanley who tragically died in 2012.Michael Stanley (1975-2012) held the position of Curator at Ikon Gallery (2002-2004), Director at MK Gallery (2004-2009), and Director at Modern Art Oxford (2009-2012).Co-curated with David Austen and George Shaw and structured loosely on Rex Warner's 1941 wartime novel The Aerodrome, a book that made a great impression on Stanley, it includes many of the artists he worked with, all of whom held him in great affection and regarded him as one of their own.Jenny Saville, for example, whose first solo show in a British public gallery took place at MAO in the year of his death, describes Stanley as someone who "wasn't scared of history or of being radical. He was as likely to be enthusing about working with a sculptor in his nineties, [as] raising funds to facilitate a young filmmakers' vision. His poetic sensibility, combined with a can-do attitude where everything's possible, is what made him so magnetic and convincing."It includes an introduction co-written by Modern Art Oxford Director, Paul Hobson and Ikon Director Jonathan Watkins, as well as texts by artists George Shaw, David Austen and Carrie Stanley.The catalogue also features biographies on all artists in the exhibition.Co-published by Ikon Gallery and Modern Art Oxford.

This publication accompanies the exhibition Graham Sutherland: An Unfinished World, curated by 2011 Turner Prize nominee George Shaw. It brings together over 80 rarely seen works on paper, featuring the artist's early Pembrokeshire landscapes from the 1930's, the devastation works of the intervening war years and Sutherland's return to the Welsh estuaries and coastlines in the 1970's.Far from traditional studies of landscape and environment, Sutherland's works not only depict but also exude a world that is as dark as it is magical, as elusive as it is recognisable. Strangely bereft of human life, the works navigate the real and imagined; where country lanes loop into each other, horizon lines fold into foregrounds, and nothing is as it seems. "Happy is the man who can make a living by his hobby." Pygmalion is a play by George Bernard Shaw, named after a Greek mythological figure. Shaw wrote the part of Eliza Doolittle - an east-end dona with an apron and three orange and red ostrich feathers - for Mrs Patrick Campbell, with whom he had a passionate but unconsummated affair. From the outset the play was a sensational success, although Shaw, irritated by its popularity at the expense of his artistic intentions, dismissed it as a potboiler. The Pygmalion of legend falls in love with his perfect female statue and persuades Venus to bring her to life so that he can marry her. But Shaw radically reworks Ovid's tale to give it a feminist slant: while Higgins teaches Eliza to speak and act like a duchess, she also asserts her independence, adamantly refusing to be his creation.

In 2014, the contemporary painter George Shaw (b. 1966) began a two-year post as associate artist in the National Gallery, London. This book documents his experiences there, as well as the work he produced in response to the Gallery s collection. Shaw is known for his minutely detailed and luminously atmospheric depictions of the urban landscape and woodlands of central England. Painting scenes from his native region, Shaw meditates on the central themes of relationships, ancestry, and love. His preferred medium, Humbrol enamel paint, is a deliberate means of distancing himself from the traditions of oil painting and, it might seem, from the values embedded in the National Gallery itself. Yet as a teenager in Coventry, Shaw was fascinated by the Gallery, traveling regularly to London to draw from those artists he found inspiring. This engaging volume reproduces his first series of paintings on canvas, together with working drawings and an essay by the artist himself."
